"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 18,1992 - 21 Thank goodness it's Friday! That's what primary students at R. H. Cornish Public School have been saying this month. Every Friday afternoon during the month of February, the students have participated in fun activities -- cross-country skiing, skating, pizza making, weaving, etc. Pictured in top photo, Wolfgang Palleske, Grade 3, Caitlin Shields, Grade 1, and Christian Nomikos, Grade 3, show off various bird seed feeders they made. The boys are holding balls of peanut butter covered with bird seed and Caitlin is holding a feeder made out of a used milk container. Pictured in the middle, Matthew Coxon, Grade 2, ap- plies glaze to his finger pottery and Angela Dalby, Grade 1, paints a stencil on her folk art project. At the bottom, Janine Croxall and Pat Lewis, Grade 1, work on computers. Unexpected Valentine for Mrs. Rita Reader EE EEE EES aE Scugog Island News This must be the month for reminiscing. Last week I was surprised to get a note from a former high school teacher enclosing one of 'my Port Perry Star clippings from 1976. It restored memo- ries of the Brekke sale, Rev. and Mrs. Teskey, the late Ronnie Edgar, the late George Samells Sr., Betty Heayn. Rev. Pogue and the late Rev. George Wylie. Hymn #252, the theme of that years Olympics, the late Cliff Love and his wife Grace with their three grandsons of New - Brunswick at that time. On Valentine's Day I never heard so many radio comments about the day. One unmarried lady felt rather out of it because she had never received a Valen- tine no matter how she longed for it. Before the program was over, a caring gentleman called in and asked if she'd be his Val- entine. At last her hopes were fulfilled. These stories impelled me to look through my stored Valen- tine treasures where I found such names as Clifford and Irene Redman, Laverne and Harold Martyn, Jean Black, Helen Colleran and Sandra Fralick etc. I could say I received an unex- pected Valentine when a Port Perry lady called from Florida to express appreciation for the Scugog Island column. There are many people who see that the Port Perry Star follows by Reta Reader £ NAb them on vacation. Perhaps there are people who would like to hear about Owen Cliff who received his public school education at the "Head" school, now the museum. Owen spent many retirement years in Barrie but has been forced to get a living arrangement near the nursing home in Toronto where his wife needs to live, as her Alzheimers develops. Don't forget the coffee breaks every Wednesday morning at the Island United Church for all women. Consider what you'd like todo for the Island United Church roof fund, a pancake brunch will be held on March 1 at the hall or a donation. The Golden Slippers helped the residents at the nursing home celebrate Valentine time by entertaining them to a lively program the previous evening. The Blackstock Cloggers also added life to the evening. This week, Nelson and Betty Reader took advantage of good weather to visit at the Kin- mount's home of Nelsons sister Elsie and family. A little boy arrived home in tears. When his mother in- quired what happened at school . he told her that the teacher had asked all those who wanted to go to heaven to put up' their hands. "You put up your hand, I hope?" asked the mother. "No," he sobbed, "You had told me to come straight home!"
