Gor ing into this game each team had one win in a best of five se- ries. The first period saw lots of ac- tion with each team scoring two goals. Islanders goals by Scott Wylie and Chad Garvock with assists to Steve Desautels two, Chad and Scott one each. The second period saw excit- ing end to end action with Scott Airey scoring to give Port a 3-2 lead. A couple of foolish penal- ties allowed Owen Sound to knot the score at 3, to end the second period. The third period saw the Isles come on strong early to score and take the lead 4-3. Goal by Mike Williams with assists to Todd Smart and Scott Wylie. The Isles worked hard for the rest of the period and eked out a 4-3 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the games. Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12:30 p.m. found the Isles and Owen Sound facing off for game four. The visitors were very aggres- sive and opened up a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. Early in the second Jason Coutoulakis got the Isles on the board from a scramble in front of the net. Assists to Chad Gar- vock and Steve Desautels. Late in the period Owen Sound scored again to take a 3-1 into the third period. The third period saw the Isles play tough and score three goals. Chad, Steve and Todd Smart all scoring. Assists to Scott Wylie, Mike Williams, Chad and Jason. Unfortunate- ly, Owen Sound also scored 3. Final score 6-4 for Owen Sound. Deciding game Tuesday, Feb. 181in Owen Sound. Juniors win three The Port Perry I.G.A. Juniors are into the playoffs now. Game three was held on Saturday evening vs Markham. At the initial blast of the referee's whistle, Julie Ball raced for the ring, secured it with Markham on hot pursuit. Julie made a pass over to Deanna Dempsey who netted our first goal within one minute into the first half. Less than two minutes later Markham retaliated, making the score 1-1. Sarah Coyne played in net and stopped many of Markham's menacing shots. " 20YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 16,1972 The Tart King Juveniles are leading their playoff scries with Uxbridge three games to onc. As the result of a fight in the Juvenile/Uxbridge match-up, three players were suspended. The OMHA convenor wants a new rule "If they fight, they are out." Local figure skaters won medals at a recent Pine Ridge Interclub competition. Cindy Van Camp won a silver medal in freeskate, Sharon Wallace a silver in the bronze interpretive. Marylo Bourgeios placed fourth in freeskate and Dawn Bronson finished sixth in dutch waltz. The midget basketball tcam from Port Perry High School were runners-up in a recent basketball tour- nament. Port Perry's first winter carnival was a resound- ing success. The Chamber of Commerce and sever- al municipal cmployees teamed up for a broomball match. Although the game was more of a cross be- tween soccer, basketball, broomball and hockey, all involved had a good time. ISYEARSAGO FEBRUARY 16,1978 The Pee Wee Legionaires captured the Lakefield tournament championship for the second year in a row. The local squad dcfeated teams from Pine- crest, Lakefield and Campbeliford. Scveral local hockey teams arc in the midst of playoffs. The Grant Mcnzics Motors Pacers were defcated by Uxbridge 7-3 climinating the local squad from the playoffs. The Legionaires ousted Uxbridge defeating them four games straight. The final game was a 6-4 viclo- ry for Port with the line of Alan Jones, Paul Storry and Bob Horton doing all the scoring. Storry had four goals and Horton and Jones one apiece. The Bobcat Midget 2 squad is currently in a round robin playoff. The team has nine out of a possible 10 points thus far. Mark Cleveland, Mike Geer, Ron Ashmore and Carey Fellows have been doing a lot of the scoring. The Emiels Juveniles are leading their series with Uxbridge two games to one. The R.H. Commish girls basketball team defeated Sunderland in the final of the Bayview Heights tour- nament to be crowned champions. Kelly Owen was named the MVP for the local team. 10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 17,1982 The Port Perry MoJacks won the first game of the best of scven playoff series with the Lindsay Mus- kies by a4-2 score. The Tween ringette team faced off against Scugog Township council during Ringette Week. The event ended ina 6-6 draw. The Port Perry Figure Skating Club members are doing wcll in competition. Al the Uxbridge Invita- tionals Sarah Labonovich placed ninth in her flight and Dana Forder 10th in hers. The J.T. Pcarcc Auctioneers Novice As defeated Cobourg 5-2. Mark Andrews had a hat trick while Steve Standiland netted two. The Pec Wee As defeated Uxbridge 11-2 to take the first game in the best of five playoff scries. Broomball playoffs are sct to get underway. C&B will facc Brians, and Utica will faccoff against Bea- cocks. Top three scorers for regular season play were Utica's Murray Down and C&B's Mike Mitchell and Bill Bridge. Scugog Lumber Atoms come out on top of Lions Club 4-1 Scugog Lumber Atoms host- ed Lions Club on P.A. Day and came out on top with a 4-1 hard fought win. The first period was scoreless thanks to the fine goaltending of Jonathon Froats and Tom Keeble. Ben Stephenson opened the scoring for Scugogon a fine rush by defenceman Chris Orr, pass- ing behind the net to Travis Pickard and out to Ben at the side of the crease and in she goes. Jonathon Reed upped the lead to 2-0 on a centering pass from Spencer Bedell and Mark Delaney. Tim Wray closed the gap to one on a fine pass from Bob Cowie. : The Lions Club proceeded to put on the pressure, but to no avail as Travis Pickard picked the top corner for Scugog on nif- ty passes from Ben and Graham Strickert. Jonathon Reed play- ing his usual stickhandling game, broke in alone on Froats and deked him out of the net, depositing the final goal of the game on an assist from Alex Be- dell. This was a fast skating con- test throughout and could have gone either way. Defensively, John Chambers for Scugog and Ryan Hawkins for Lions stood out. Offensively Bob Cowie for Lions and John Bacon for Scu- gog had exceptional games.
