Canada 125 ideas Celebrating our heritage By Gail Sheridan Curator-Director Scugog Shores Museum This week is Heritage Week and what a great time to start prepar- ing for Canada's 125th birthday. Our heritage is the total environ- ment we have inherited from the past and must pass on to the future. As the Ontario Government's statement of vision states, 'On- tario's heritage is a living resource. It is the basis of our identity and our social and economic well-being. It is a source of confidence in what we can achieve; as we come to unders- tand it, we discover who we are and what we can do. We see an Ontario in which individuals and com- munities are enabled to learn about their heritage and to conserve and develop it as the foundation of liveability and continuity in the province." Heritage Week also marks time to appreciate and acknowledge the people in our communities who dedicate themselves to conserving and developing our heritage. There are many activities you and your children can do to get involv- ed in our heritage for Canada 125. Organize a history treasure hunt, using clues from historic houses, plaque sites and other sources. Find out what kind of wildlife once inhabited in your local area and find out if they can be introduced. Record your family tree and make copies to give as gifts to relatives. Organize a 'History Fair" for your school or youth group. Recreate a day in the life of your community. Choose some local streets which have been named after famous peo- ple. Research these people and the times they lived. Join in the restoration of a heritage structure in your community. Organize a historic fashion show. Hold a benefit dinner or dance with a heritage theme and use the money to develop a heritage- releated project. If sponsoring or organizing a sports tournament, have a demonstration of the way sports were played 125 years ago. These are just a few ideas to get you started in celebrating our im- portant heritage and Canada's birthday. Remember, the Scugog Shores aa Stay in shape without getting bored! The purpose of Mrs. Harris' visit was to look over the mu- seum's buildings and artifacts and give advice on the care of the museum's collection. She said the museum staff has taken care of the collection to the best of its ability, but improvements could be made. Un- fortunately, funds are needed to implement the improvements. The handling of photographs is one area that must be looked at, she said. Mrs. Harris suggested having copies made of the originals, or covering the originals in a sealed plastic enve- lope. b Paper documents and textiles are another area of concern. This is not unusual. Many museums face the same dilemma. Because it is such a common problem, the Scugog Shores Museum will host a textiles and paper workshop in the upcom- ing months. About five other area museums will participate.
