Students like Amanda Robinson reaffirm teacher Reg Philip's faith in the future of Cana- da. Amanda's class is currently studying Canada at the Crossroads. After watching a short animated film entitled "The Empress Has Tea", Mr. Philip asked each student to create his or her own cartoon character and do a comic strip of a trip across Canada. Amanda's fin- ished product, starring character Max Maple, was "the finest piece of work | have seen from any student during my teaching career," Mr. Philip said, adding Amanda captured the distinctive qualities of each province. Council gave its approval to a design which features an eagle to recognize the native Indians of this area; stalks of corn for agriculture, and a muskie and a steamship which refer to the lake. Sandra Little was crowned Cartwright High School's Heart Queen. Princesses were Pat Reedor and Melanie Willisas. A early morning fire in a garage appartment on Highway 47 claimed the lives of four men. Fire officials believe a flammable liquid which was poured on a sood stove to kindle the flames, triggered an explosion and subsequent fire. Killed in the blaze were tenant John Pollard, 43, Mike Robinson, 19, John Robinson, 21, and Roy Crawford, 17. Surviving the fire were Jim Pollard, 21, Brad Hocley, 20, and David Millar, 17. Wendy Bracken, who graduated from Port Perry High School last year with an average of 92.5 per cent, won a $100 Carter Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement.
