"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Country Style Bantams need win to stay alive The Port Perry Country Style Bantam As find themselves in a must win situation after splitting a pair of games in their O.M.H.A. quarter-finals with Cobourg last week. Tuesday night in Cobourg, a pair of goals from Sean Ellis and outstanding goaltending by Mike Pashley spearheaded a great team effort to give Country Style a 2-1 win and tie the series at five points each. Ellis took a pass from Jay Tredway in the slot halfway through the first period and fired a nice shot to give Port the lead. Near the middle of the second, Ellis blasted a long shot from the blue line that skinned the outside of the post, then rebounded perfectly to bounce off the goaltender's skate into the net for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars finally got on the board ear- ly in the third, scoring a power-play goal that gave Pashley no chance. In spite of three third period penalties, Port held on to go home winners. Everybody turned in a great per- formance, with Pashley stoning the big shooters repeatedly. Saturday night at home, Port took over where they left off in Cobourg. Pashley was fire-cracker hot again, stopping three clean breakaways in Midget Bs drop series to Owen Sound 3-1 Canadian 'l'ire Midget B Is- landers made the long trek to Owen Sound by bus on Feb. 18. Through snow, rain and fog the team arrived for their 8 p.m. game with the quarter round tied at two games each. The Isles started slowly and found themselves down 1-0 in the first minutes of play. They settled down and played some good hockey and at 6:33 of the first, tied the score 1-1 on a goal by Chad Garvock. Assists to Ja- son Coutoulakis and Steve De- sautels. Both teams exchanged goals late in the period to enter the second tied at 2-2. Port's second goal was scored by Chad from Steve and goalie Rick Hutchin- son. In the second period the Isles controlled the play but some good saves by the Owen Sound goalie kept the game close. Dar- rell Vander Slagt scored on a break away at 6:44 to give his team a 3-2 lead. Assists to Noah St. Amand and Rick Hutchin- son. Port scored two more goals but the referee had trouble keeping up with the pace and couldn't see the puck enter the net from just inside the blueline and therefore ruled that the puck never crossed the line. A foolish penalty late in the sec- ond gave the Sound their oppor- tunity to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third. Play was even in the third but the officials seemed to favor Owen Sound on several calls . and as a result of an offside that should have taken the faceoff into the Owen Sound end, a goal was scored with only three sec- onds left on the clock to give the game to Owen Sound by a score of 4-3 and the series 3-2. the first period alone. The scorers were hot too, building a 5-1 lead by the middle of the game. Then the roof fell in and the Cougars netted six straight goals to take a 7-5 over- time win and a 7-5 point lead in the series. Ellis got Port going in the first minute when he took Tredway's pass while on a line change, blasted the puck from almost center and beat a partially screened goalie cleanly. Ian Shrigley followed that with a bad angle shot for an unassisted goal just two minutes later. ) Craig Laird and Jeremy Geer teamed up early in the second to in- crease the lead when Laird banged in a short one after a couple of nifty moves at the blue line and behind the net by Geer. Dave Bourgeois also assisted on the goal. Cobourg finally scored on a powerplay but Port came right back when Daryl Bourgeois' great éffort gave Shrigley a rebound for his'se- cond goal of the game. The 5-1 goal prompted a Cougar goaltending change and somehow in the shift, the wheels came off! Cobourg scored three times in the last five minutes of the second, tied it up halfway through the third; then counted twice in the final 2:54 'of overtime against a Port team that seemed to be running out of steam. The loss sets up a seventh game in Cobourg Tuesday night, with Port needing a win to stay alive and force an eighth game back home.
