~ "A Family Tradition for 125 Years . Need for affordable housing == By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The Township of Scugog is in need of affordable housing, says an official at Durham Region Non-Profit Housing. Valerie Cranmer, assistant general manager, says it is time for Scugog to consider subsi- dized housing in the municipali- ty pality in the Region of Durham, apart from the Town of Ajax which has its own agency, that doesn't have some sort of afford- able housing. There are a number of hous- ing developments in the area which are working quite well and Ms. Cranmer believes Port Perry needs one. It is set to occupied on April 1. "There is definitely a need for such a building in Port Perry," she said. When questioned by Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie as to what benefits the township would derive from such a devel- opment, Ms. Cranmer provided a number of points. She argued money would be injected into the community both in terms of the local busi- ness, and also by the employ- ment generated both during the project and after its completion. She said a large amount of the work will be done locally. "About 99 per cent of the tend- ers will be done by local contrac- tors," she said. Despite the apparent benefits of such a development, council 1s still wary of the plans due to the preferred location by the agency. It is seeking to combine its plans with that of the contro- versial Vanedwards proposal on Union Avenue in Prince Albert. Council recently voted against the plan to locate the af- fordable housing on that site, citing a number of concerns. Its biggest concern was its proximi- ty to the downtown core and oth- er amenities. But as Councillor Christie stressed, the objection to the project was based on the loca- tion, not on the idea of afforda- ble housing. Ms. Cranmer said the devel- opment would cover a total area of approximately three acres and would house approximately 140 people. It would offer two and three bedroom units. Fifty per cent of the units would be subsidized, while the other 50 per cent would be market-rent, she said. "It's a family project," she said.
