Loans ant sublhain _ gao ll ob 3 16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 10, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Senior Citizens heading to Florida on Thurs., Mar. 12 The Senior Citizen's Club meeting opened in the usual manner with the singing of O'Canada. Edna Beckett was at the piano and Gord Prentice in the chair. Vilma Gianinni read the minutes of the last meeting in the absence of secretary Mary Cannon. The hours for exercise class and line dancing were con- firmed at 11 am. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays. It was also an- nounced that the program had been extended for an additional 10 weeks to May 12. Anyone in- terested in trying to reach the pinch an inch figure is welcome. Even seniors have dreams. The members agreed to give up our use of Latcham Centre on Wednesday, July 1 to accommo- date Central Seven's annual picnic. President Gord attended a public meeting in the munici- pal office to discuss the promo- tion of a series of events to be held throughout the summer commemorating Canada's 125th birthday as well as the 200th birthday of Peter Perry the founder of our town. Our ex- ecutive is going to meet to dis- cuss the possibility of our club sponsoring one of the events that were suggested. Jim and Min Martin have some summer trips in the off- ing. We go to the races at Wood- bine on June 14 and again on Oct. 1. On May 23, 24, and 25 we are going to Pittsburg, PA. and on Oct. 16 to 19 to Lancaster, PA. They are booking seats now so don't miss the bus. There are still a couple of seats left on our Florida trip, March 12to 21. Edna Beckett and the choir are tuning up for some good old rollicking Irish songs for a St. Patrick's celebration at our March 11 meeting. At our East- er pot luck on April 8 the club is providing the meat and dessert courses. Don't forget to bring your own dishes and silverware to help cut the crap, {garbage}. Doris and Mae and their com- mittee are continuing to hold their what not table at all our meetings. Paperbacks and knick-knacks are welcome. The practice of celebrating our birthday babies each month on the fourth Wednesday is being reintroduced. Formerly the president got to kiss the birth- day damsels so Gord is looking forward to that ritual, (the la- dies liked it too}. The door priz- es were won by Jim Martin, George Hearn, Gladys Carter, Jim Redman and Marjory Som- merville. We had a presentation from Mrs. Elaine Arsenault who di- rects the C.O.P.E. program in Uxbridge and Scugog. C.O.P.E. is a program that assists people living in the community under a stressful atmosphere such as recovering from a nervous breakdown or being released from a psychiatric home or hav- ing difficulty adjusting after the death of a loved one etc. Volun- teers are given a course of 18 hours before they are matched one-on-one with a client. There is also an advanced course of 60 hours training offered. The pro- gram also provides group thera- py and sponsors a drop in centre on Wednesday afternoons in the Kinsmen Hall. Mrs. Arsenault's presentation also included a video on Community Care showing the various programs that organization sponsors. C.O.P.E. is one of those pro- grams working under the Com- munity Care umbrella group. Their clients are referred to the program by the various social agencies operating in the mu- nicipality. The meeting closed with the reciting of the Mizpa Benedic- tion. See you in two weeks, God willing. Congratulations Jim and Chris The excitement you feel as you begin your new venture is shared by us all.
