Port Perry Star The Township of Scugog has passed a bylaw to regulate smokingin public areas. Under the terms of the new bylaw, no person will be able to smoke in a municipal office, building or i, 1 except in designated areas, The township is required to designate no more than 25 per cent of the total floor PPHS trio wins at Drama Festival By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Three Port Perry High School students are on their way to compete in the Eastern Ontario Showcase after placing first in the Durham Region Sears Dra- ma Festival. OAC students Carla McMil- lan and Tara Galberg and Grade 11 student Sara Hawk- er won an Outstanding Pro- duction award and an Award of Excellence for ensemble work for their production "Ghost Sto- ries." The Durham Region Sears Drama Festival was held at Dunbarton High School in Pick- ering last week. Three of the 14 plays performed were chosen to go on to the Eastern Finals which will be held in Peterbo- rough on April 14, 15and 16. Along with Ghost Stories, Dunbarton's "The Real Inspec- tor Hound" and Eastdale's "Canterbury Tales" were cho- sen. "Ghost Stories", 1s about three childhood friends who go camping to discuss their prob- lems in life. Carla plays Marga- ret, Sara portrays Dodie and Tara plays Alex. The director of the play is Port Perry High School teacher Lisa Taylor. Two other students from PPHS also won merit awards at the Sears Drama Festival, but do not go on to compete at the Regionals. Matt Shepherd won a merit award for the script "The Immortals", which he wrote and David Volman won an acting award for the same play. If "Ghost Stories" is chosen as one of the top plays at the East- ern Ontario Showcase, the three students will go on to rep- resent Port Perry at the Ontario Finals. Godspell next PPHS production The musical "Godspell" will be the next dramatic production to be performed by students at Port Perry High School. Godspell, which is a rock mu- sical based on the gospel accord- ing to St. Matthew, will star Da- vid Talbot as Jesus. The play features music writ- ten by Stephen Schwartz. Some well-known songs include "Day by day," "Turn back, Oman" and "On the willows." The play's musical director, Dawn Taylor, says the play will incorporate a 1999-type theme to demonstrate that "the world is worried about the future." Godspell will be performed at Port Perry High School April 9 to 11. Starting timeis 8 p.m. space of the building for smok-. ing. : _ In prohibited smoking areas, it is required to post "No Smok- ing" signs in areas clearly visi- ble to the public. In a place of public assembly, the proprietor of the building is required to designate no more than 40 per cent of the total floor space for smoking and outline the areas where smoking is not permitted. Signs are required to outline the areas in which smoking is permitted. The maximum fine for contra- vention of this bylaw is $2,000. These provisions are only in effect when the public facility is being utilized for a public event. If a private group was to rent the facility, the bylaw does not have to be adhered to unless specifically stated. Although council endorsed the bylaw, there was some de- bate as to which areas of a pub- lic building would be affected by the bylaw. For example, council was un- sure whether or not it could pro- BELIEVE IT! hibit smoking in the dressing 'rooms of Scugog Arena, arguing that private groups rent the fa- cility and therefore would not have to adhere to the bylaw. Under the terms of the bylaw, the township is required to post the "No Smoking" signs in the facility. But Farl Cuddie, ad- ministrator/clerk for the Town- ship of Scugog, says it will go much further than the neces- sary bylaw requirements to post lcoholic Beverages Al-. "No lowed" signs in public facilities such as Scugog Arena. Mr. Cuddie believes it is nec- essary to post these signs as the township could be held respon- sible for an accident which may occur as a result of a party drinking on the property who "had rented the facility. No smoking regulations have been part of the Fire Marshal's Act for a number of years, but the township has never enacted a bylaw, choosing instead to en- force it loosely. Mr. Cuddie said recent complaints from resi- dents prompted the move at Monday's council meeting.
