By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Plans for a major develop- ment in the east end of Port Perry received a cool reception from Scugog Council recently. William Meek from the Mi- chael Stuart Group presented the plans to the Township of Scugog Council at a meeting on Monday. Mr. Meek, who represents A&P Properties Limited said his client is considering an 85,000-square foot outdoor mall. It will feature a 26,000- square foot A&P store as one of the major tenants, with two oth- er "Triple A" tenants with sizes of 24,000 sq. ft. and 8,000 sq. ft serving as the two other major tenants. He said the retail portion would serve as the first phase of the development. A residential phase would be added later fea- turing approximately 120 resi- dential units consisting of three-storey single and town- house units. These units would be north of the mall, overlooking Lake Scugog. The development is planned for the vacant land on the north- 1 east corner of Highway 7A and Water Street. Despite this rather large and aggressive scheme, council greeted the plans with little en- thusiasm. "I hope you come up with something morc imaginative than that," Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie said referring to the tenative blueprint pre- sented. "It looks awful." Councillor Christie continu- ally hammered away at the plan, constantly criticizing it for its lack of imagination. : She questioned Mr. Meek whether a hotel or motel was planned for the development in the future. Councillor Christie said such a facility was "grossly Major development receives cool reception from council needed." "I would like to see a hotel or a motel somewhere in the town- ship, anywhere," Councillor Christie said. "It's badly, badly needed." Both Councillor Christie and Mayor Howard Hall expressed the need for a hotel or motel in the township and Mayor Hall hinted that the development would be more accepted ifit con- sidered this component. But Mr. Meek said there were no plans for such a facility. Mayor Hall was also critical of the overall plan. Following the presentation, he told the Port Perry Star that it was a TurntoPage 12 Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
