iE "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1992 - 13 Jim Grieve has spent 20 years with the company Adjusting to new role as owner of IGA By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Port Perry IGA changed own- ership March 9, but customers will notice little difference. The same friendly cashiers, department heads and manag- er will still be there greeting customers every day. In fact, if a change of owner- ship had not been announced last week the change would have gone unnoticed. But Monday morning last week was a big day for Jim and Chris Grieve, as they assumed sole ownership of the thriving food business in downtown Port Perry. Mr. Grieve, who previously ~ operated a garage on Water St., began his career in the food business in 1972 after being hired as a training-manager by Dan Madsen. Mr. Madsen and Alex Ramey purchased Port Perry IGA from Jack Hope about seven years earlier, with Mr. Madsen as- suming the role of manager of the store. Over the next few years Mr. Grieve was taught all aspects of the food business and when Mr. Madsen sold his shares to Mr. Ramey in 1975, Jim assumed the role of store manager. In March 1981 he was given the opportunity to purchase shares in the business and be- came a partner of Mr. Ramey's until he passed away last year. Since Mr. Ramey's death in May 1991, Mr. Grieve has been working with the Ramey family to purchase the remainder of the shares of the business. In assuming ownership, Jim reflected on his years in the business and said he was par- ticularly grateful for the knowl- edge he was able to acquire working with Mr. Ramey. He told the Star Mr. Ramey had been in the food industry since he was a young man, and at the time Mr. Ramey became a partner in the ownership of Port Perry IGA in 1965, he was a retired vice-president of Oshawa Foods, the distributor for IGA stores. When Mr. Grieve started working at Port Perry IGA it was a relatively small store on Queen St., with about 6,500 sq. ft. of space. | The first major expansion of the building came about in 1981 when the size of the build- ing was doubled by building on both the west and south sides. At this time all of the existing departments were enlarged and a Deli was added. Is was also able to offer a much wider selection of grocery and meat products with the additional space. As the community continued to grow Mr. Ramey and Mr. Grieve responded with a second expansion, which commenced in the summer of 1987. This expansion required the purchase of an adjoining prop- erty and considerable engineer- ing as the building had to be oo constructed over a small creek running to the west of the build- ing. Adding an additional 8,400 sq. ft. to building, the Port Perry IGA now covers a total of 21,400 sq. ft. in the heart of town. Of this space move than Jim Grieve is adjusting to his new role as owner of the Port Perry 15,000 sq. ft. is devoted to retail and the remainder to storage, offices, and preparation areas. Once again all departments were expanded and this time the store added a Bake Shop to the premises. Jim and Chris will be work- ing together at 1GA, and cus- tomers will no doubt notice their smiles are just a little bit larger this week. These smiles come from the pride and excitement they are feeling as they start out as the new owners of Port Perry IGA. = IGA after working in various capacities with the company for the past 20 years. Mr. Grieve and his wife Chris took over ownership of the business on March 9, 1992, purchasing the remaining shares from the family of his former boss and partner Alex Ramey. J.
