Last year, nine cases were reported. Dr. Churchill says the num- ber of reported rabies incidenc- es continues to be low, noting that the only other incident of rabies for 1992 was a rabid fox in the Cannington area in Janu- ary. As of April 1 callers phoning these numbers will no longer Anyone needing emergency services such as police, fire de- partment or ambulance must call 9-1-1. Those requesting non-emergency fire department business such as permission to burn, fire inspections, fire prevention and hall tours are to call the fire department administration The administration office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 rare, but adds "raccoon rabies" is spreading north from the Eastern United States and is currently in upstate New York. This was the first case of a rabid raccoon in the area, said Ms. Barrett. Although Durham Region does not experience many cases of rabies, there are still precau- tions the public should take, says Ms. Barrett. First and foremost is to main- tain a consistent vaccination record for pets, and keep them away from stray animals. Stray animals should be reported. If a pet should come into con- tact with a wild animal, the owner should bath the wound as soon as possible, and then take the animal to the veterinarian. The incident should also be reported to health officials. Dr. R.J. Kyle, Durham Re- gion Medical Officer of Health says the same procedure should be followed for a person coming into contact with a.wild animal. The area should be washed and cleaned immediately. Alco- hol is effective to cleanse wounds. The person should then seek medical attention. Although the procedure for rabies shots was rather lengthy and painful in the past, Dr. Kyle says it has changed in the past few years. A series of five shots over 30 days is given in the shoulder area, and notin the ab- domen as was the procedure in the past. Also an anti-biotic so- lution is applied around the wound. Dr. Kyle says the number of people coming in contact with rabies "has been relatively low." He says the health department receives a number of calls re- porting animal bites, but adds most of these are by pets and not wild animals. Energy consumption can be shifted by running your dish - washer, washer and dryers dur- ing the weekend off-peak hours, or during the off-peak hours at night. "These small shifts of energy individually may seem insignif- icant on their own, but collec- tively your utility company can save thousands of dollars, and in the process offset a portion of future hydro increases," said Mr. Adderley. Last year Scugog Hydro de- cided to receive its power bill from Ontario Hydro based on the time the energy was used rather than whenever energy was used. This resulted in a sav- ings of $12,468 on a total bill of $2,713,295.
