Sunrise Optimist Club of Port Perry becomes a reailty The Sunrise Optimist Club became a reality on Saturday when the group had its first offi- cial meeting at the Gate Restau- rantin Port Perry. Grant Livie, an Optimist In- ternational field representative from Ajax Optimist Club con- ducted the meeting. The fee for new members is $30, with annual dues of $60. Regular meetings will be held on the second and fourth Satur- day of every month at 8:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to become a charter member of the Sunrise Optimist Club of Port Perry must apply before April 11. The charter roster will be closed af- ter this date. Applicants after this date will be regarded as reg- ular members. For information call member- ship chairman Sue Scholfield at 985-3031. The new number (985-3434) allows residents of Uxbridge and other areas that can call toll free to Port Perry to also reach the Distress Centre free of charge. A call to this new number will be electronically fowarded to the Distress Centre in Oshawa. Most of the Distress Centre's calls come from the Oshawa and Whitby areas, but with this new number, more residents of the entire region will be able to call without a toll charge. The Distress Centre of Dur- ham is staffed by trained volun- teers 24 hours a day. The ser- vice is confidential, anonymous and nonjudgemental. ROTARY CLUB OF Centre offers new Port Perry number Whatever a caller's problem is, the Distress lines are there for them. Talking through prob- lems with a supportive volun- teer can help. There is also a Youthline and Kidsline available at the Dis- tress Centre. Youthline is for teens wishing to speak with a peer. It operates from 4 p.m. and 7p.m. daily. These lines are staffed by volun- teers under the age of 21. Kidsline is available for pre- teens. They can call at anytime to speak with a volunteer about their concerns. All volunteers are Durham Region residents, and are aware of the local issues and are sensi- tive to the geographical diversi- ty within the region.
