2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 7, 1992" "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Durham youths to celebrate in Manitoba Approximately 125 young people from Durham will be cel- ebrating Canada's birthday in Manitoba this summer, Dur- ham MP Ross Stevenson an- nounced last week. 2 As part of Voyaguers Canada 92, Durham has been twinned with Dauphin-Swan River, a ru- ral community in west-central Manitoba. The two communities will participate in an exchange pro- gram between the communities Town Hall 1873 lj, ° proudly presents this summer. The participants will spend a week in the commu- nity, and then will serve as hosts to the participants in their home. The exchanges will take place between June and Novem- ber. It is open to all Canadian residents or landed immigrants aged 16 to 21. The exchanges are being ar- ranged between federal ridings represented by 295 members of parliament. This will be the largest youth ex- change program in Canada's history. Due to this diversity, Mr. Stevenson sees this as a re- warding experience for the par- ticipants. : "It's considerably different than our part of southern Onta- rio, so the exchange visits should give everyone involved some valuable insights into how other Canadians live," he said. A local organizing committee will be established shortly to co- ordinate the program in the rid- ing. It will review the applica- tions of those wishing to partici- pate. Voyageurs Canada 92 infor- mation kits have been sent to high schools and most youth or- ganizations. The application forms can be obtained from Mr. Stevenson's office in Oshawa, and must be returned by May 8. The program is being orga- nized by the Secretary of State for Canada, and is sponsored by Air Canada as well as other cor- porate supporters. But Councillor Pearce says all ic not lost. It is her under- standing that applications for 1993 will still be accepted and she says the township has every intention of submitting applica- tions. Despite criticism, Councillor Pearce says the project was well worth the money, pointing to the substantial improvements which have been realized in the area.
