"We must go ahead with pro- posals (brought to council) if the plans areright," he says. Councillor Dietlein says most of the proposals he has seen re- cently should be given the go- ahead. The Ward 4 councillor says he sees "a lot of desperate people" wanting to build in the area, but are stalled by the various levels of government. By denying the public a chance to build in the area, he says Scugog is putting out bad advertising that it is against de- velopment and doesn't allow building. "We need activity to stimu- late the economy." Councillor Dietlein points to two recent proposals to rein- force his point. One is the pro- posed development of the Con- way property on Highway 7A near Water Street, and the oth- er is the 30,000-square foot gro- cery store at Highway 7A near Queen Street west of Port Perry. Although he doesn't approve of the Conway scheme, he does support the grocery store and believes it should be given ap- proval to go ahead. Councillor Dietlein has been frustrated by the apparent hesi- tation by the levels of govern- ment to allow growth. He points to a recent report by a Region of Durham planner who ques- tioned if Port Perry was a viable place for development. "The region and the munici- pality should work together," he said. Another concern of Councillor Dietlein's is the province's freeze on development on the Oak Ridges Moraine for the next two years. He is opposed to this freeze because he says it af- fects the economic future of the communities, while protecting areas for residents in Metropoli- tan Toronto to enjoy. "Scugog isn't a playground for somebody else, it's a communi- ty." Councillor Dietlein says de- velopment is crucial to a com- munity and fears that the town- ship will not grow if they continue to send out negative impressions. Police charge one following run-in with MNR officers One man has been charged with numerous offences follow- ing an incident with Ministry of Natural Resources officials. According to Durham Region- al Police, two MNR officers were conducting routine inspections of ice fishermen on Lake Scugog near Caesarea on March 10 when they confronted four men.
