Mr. Harry and Doris Hill, Mu- riel Gibson, Marion Durward, Lillian Harper, Myrtle Snel- grove and myself travelled to Iiji, New Zealand and Austra- lia with Rostad Tours for 22 days. Rev. Art Rodgers and Rev. David Liker were our tour guides. What patience they had, herding 30 people on and off planes, buses, and boats and into our wonderful hotels. The food was just too much. The tree ripened fruit was a special treat, tasting so different from our imported one. My favorite "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Residents enjoy trip at breakfast was the apricots bigger than our peaches. Fjji is a tropical island and the Moaris people are very kind and friendly. This is where we could first see and swim in the blue Pacific Ocean. The lush green forests are the first thing you notice. Too the flowers were beautiful all throughout the tour. New Zealand is my favor- ite with over 2,000 different trees. There we viewed the Southern Alps from north to south and drove up into the ever snow-capped peaks several times. The cities are some very beau- tiful and so clean. Our first city was Aukland with the famous "Coat Hanger Bridge" and called the City of Sails. Here they can grow vegetables all year long. We saw 19 breeds of sheep along with huge deer herds pasturing on sides of the mountains and along the roads. Here the cows have their tails docked to prevent Mastitis and also so they can't flick their tails in the farmers face as he milks them. We saw a rotary shed where 20 cows were being milked in stalls in Herringbone style. They are sprayed, washed, and milked in six min- utes. Three hundred cows can be milked in an hour and no TWO-FER Fiji flies. In Rotorcea it is a Geo Thermal area. Here we viewed several gey- sers and whirling hot mud beds. They use this steam for heating homes, and making hydro using pipes of stainless steel. This area Wakato Valley is the cen- tre of the largest agricultural district in the world. One of New Zealand's leading tourist attractions is the Glow Worm Grotto. We went into caves by boat lit by shimmering tiny glow worms. Millions of them. At Christ Church we rode in a gondola, up 2,500 feet to top of Sugar Loaf Mountain to a spec- tacular view of the city of Queenstown and the port. Here we saw the Avon River off Ox- ford Street. Everywhere are names from England. The mar- ket for cattle here is Japan. Here rabbits are a dangerous pest as are possums. Sixteen million possums are T.B. car- riers. These were both brought here as pets. We drove up 3,000 feet into mountains with sheep every- where. Here the Marino sheep are the sheep raised for it's wool only. They must graze on moun- tain sides as their hard foot will soften if raised on damp soil and sorot.
