| , | 28 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 14, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Eaglettes win at Regional tourney The final game was against #1 seed Ajax, who had played in the "B" Division all year and only for the regionals were al- lowed to play in the "C" Division (?). 'A very competitive game that had our girls pushed to the limit. Julia lead the Port attack with four goals. Singles went to Stacey and Melissa. Assists were given to Leanne Layzell (two), Melissa, Alaina Davis, and Katherine. Six goals were not enough as the potent Ajax squad overwhelmed the Ea- glettes with nine goals of their own. A berth in the semi-final would not be known until the re- sult of the Oshawa vs. Whitby #1 game. The Whitby #1 victory advanced Port to the semi-final against the Whitby #1 group. This game had the XL Gas Bar team looking for revenge of the double overtime loss on the Ajax Silver Ring final. Once ice flooding was arranged the Ea- glettes were ready to respond to thechallenge. Julia opened the scoring from Alaina Burger but an exciting first period ended in a 1-1 stale- mate. Midway through the sec- ond period Julia gave Port a temporary lead with an unas- sisted goal. Whitby tied the game with just 3:28 remaining. Overtime? Melissa's goal with under two minutes to play gave Port alead that seemed to be se- cure. Could the Eaglettes hold off Whitby for the remaining 1:52? Twenty seconds later Mi- randa was given a penalty. I'he difficulty was compounded by an injury to Julia. A timeout with 45 seconds to play gave Katherine, Sarah, Stacey, Me- lissa and goalie Alicia the rest they needed to hold Whitby off the score sheet. It was off to the final for a rematch against the large and physical Ajax team. Ajax opened the scoring but Port replied witha pair of goals by Melissa with assists on both goals to Miranda. Ajax took its turn to score two and had a 3-2 lead at the end of the first peri- od. Scoring in pairs seemed to the order of the game, only Ajax scored the next two before Port replied with our pair, one by Ju- lia, the other by Nicole, both un- assisted. The large and physical Ajax team took its toll on the Port Perry girls. Eleven of the 12 Ajax girls move up to Petite next year. In contrast Port Perry has only four of 15 of age to move up to Petite (with Ali- cia, five will be in Petite). Age, size and physical play gave Ajax the gold medal with a 9-4 win. Port Perry earned the silver with some excellent team play, super spirit and with an atti- tude of doing their best in all ways. The coaching staff applaud your effort and dedication girls. Thanks to all the parents for your support and understand- ing and a special thank you to the XL Gas Bar for continuing their sponsorship in these tough economic times. | Kelly, Zuly, Greenway, Bruce BARRISTERS and SOLICITERS Motor Vehicle - Criminal Personal Injury - Wills Real Estate - Family Law Corporate & Commercial EVENINGS & WEEKENDS BY APPOINTMENT 114 King St. E., Oshawa 723-2278 Scugog Chamber of Commerce '02 ELIMINATION DRAW Over *4,500. in Prizes Only 100 tickets available Draw to be held Thursday, April 23, 1992 at The Country Oven at approximately 9:00 p.m. Prime Rib Dinner - $17.00 per person (allinclusive) Cocktails - 6:30 p.m. Dinner - 7:00 p.m. Wayne Wanamaker Bill Dowson Proceeds to further Chamber of Commerce work For tickets or further information call: LICENCE #063178 Eo ee -- 985-9663/days 985-0302/evenings 985-7306 Z <> ' 7 : 7 J : ee SATIS Rs 10 YEARS AGO R.H.
