The boat, which is scheduled to hit the water on May 12, is a 25-foot Baha, powered by a 7.4 litre Volvo engine. Constable Hall says it will be fully- equipped and will include a light baron the roof of the boat. The marine patrol unit will operate on 12-hour shifts throughout the summer and will patrol Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe most weekends and all long weekends. But even the marine unit has been affected by budget cuts. This summer it will operate with only two officers, as op- posed to the four officers of past years. There was fear earlier this year that the marine unit would be cancelled due to budgetary cuts, but it was given the go ahead last week. Constable Hall said an article in the Port Perry Star reporting the cancellation of the unit may have helped to save the boat. He said a number of residents expressed concern over the can- cellation and were contemplat- ing circulating a petition. "We will beback," he said. Building activity improving Building activity is beginning to show signs of improvement in the Township of Scugog. Last month the number of permits issued totalled 20, up from 11 for the same month a year earlier. Also the total value of the permits were up to a value of $831,700. For March 1990, the value was $773,340. Single family dwellings led the way with three permits to- Vandalism While police were out fighting crime, vandalism was occuring in theirown back yard. Although the number of per- mits in the single family dwell- ing, additions and alterations category doubled to a total of six, the value of $126,500, was down considerably from the same month's figure in 1991 of $193,190. Two permits valuing $110,000 in the Industrial sec- tor aided in the good showing as well. Despite the improved show- ing in March, the figures are still down for the year. Year-to- date figures for 1992 show 24 permits have been issued at a value of $1,433,200. This is down for the same period in 1991 0f $1,760,640 when 29 per- Fol wereissued. SCOTT ANDERSON/ PORT PERRY STAR No vending carts downtown The Township of Scugog council has upheld its tradition of banning roadside vending carts from downtown. On Monday, council rejected a request from Tom Doran, of Ajax, to operate a hot dog vend- ing stand in Palmer Park. Mr. Doran was seeking council's permission to operate the stand on a yearly basis in the area. But it took council only a mat- ter of minutes to reject the re- quest. Earl Cuddie, Township of Scugog Clerk, expressed fear that if this request was granted the township would be "flooded with other requests." Ward 1 my Councillor Ken Carruthers also spoke out against the proposal. As president of the Chamber of Commerce, Councillor Carruth- ers opposed the request on the basis that it would take busi- ness away from the area mer- chants in fixed storefront loca- tions. He said it would be unfair for a hot dog cart to get away with not paying business taxes to the community, while the local mer- chants would still be required to pay thelevies. "It would be grossly unfair," he said. In a unanimous vote, council rejected Mr. Doran's request. Kids to sign flags From Page 1 celebration is part of a national tour to mark the 125th birthday of Canada. The national Kins- men Club introduced a cross- country flag tour where chil- dren from each town will get the opportunity to sign a large flag when it arrives in their commu- nity. It was the original goal to get 1.25 million signatures on the flag nation wide. But Dave Rob- inson, national Kinsmen presi- dent and a resident of Seagrave, told the Port Perry Star that this goal has been increased substantially. Approximately 750,000 signatures alone were obtained in British Columbia. The Kinsmen now hope to top four million. $8./ Couple in Advance $15./Couple in Advance David Goldberg, Port Perry 985-263( Pete Kneale, Port Perry 986.0979 KINSMEN CLUB OF PORT PERRY presents ...
