avait Wn . poe I "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 14, 1992-3 Province should reconsider Sunday shopping, MPP says By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star In a major about face, Gord Mills, Durham East MPP, says the Ontario government should rethink its opposition to Sunday shopping. Mr. Mills says in light of the poor economy the government as no other choice. "Personally, I think in order to kick-start the economy the government must look at Sun- day shopping," he told residents at a recent tax forum in Scugog. Mr. Mill says he told Premier Bob Rae the same thing last week. Post office meeting to be held in Blackstock The public meeting to discuss the closing of the Blackstock Post Office is scheduled for to- night (Tuesday, April 14). The meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Blackstock Recrea- tion Centre, will be held by Can- ada Post Corporation. According to Deby Martin, media relations officer for Cana- da Post, the meeting will dis- cuss the closure of the post office and discuss the mode of mail de- livery which the area residents would prefer. There are a num- ber of choices including super mail boxes or a retail postal out- let." Canada Post announced re- cently its intention to close the Blackstock Post Office and move it to a nearby retail outlet. Tough budget From Page 1 and they would be heard before the budget is introduced. Although Mr. Mills was not able to give the specifics of the budget, as he is not privy to that information, he was able to offer at least a sampling of what could be expected. He predicted there would not be the customary rise in the sin taxes ( tobacco, alcohol or gas)in the budget. He says by adding a cent or two taxes would not raise the needed money. In fact it would only add about $350 million. He also said there would prob- ably be no further cuts to educa- tion and hospitals. "I don't think it's going tobe a slash and cut budget," he said. But Mr. Mills says it is going to be a tough choice. "I think it will be a tough deci- sion for the government to make," he said. "We cam- paigned against Sunday shop- ing, but we can't stick our eadsin thesand." But Mr. Mills admitted that a lot of the promises made during the election were not meant to be carried out. "To be honest, a lot of promis- es were made during the elec- tion, but we didn't expect to get into power," he said. Now that people are clam- mering for Sunday shopping, the party has been forced to re- think the position. 'The government is also inves- tigating the possibility of intro- ducing casinos in Ontario. It an- nounced recently that it is considering at least six gam- bling establishments in border cities. Mr. Mills says there is a need for casinos to be established in order to compete with the Amer- ican cities. He says American border cities are getting heavily involvedinit. "We must offset the potential of Ontarians going across the border," he said. Mr. Mills stressed however that they are only investigating the possibility and that nothing was "setin stone."
