Ey ne ri I lH Fo Aram Aral "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" ( TN Hn On April 20, 1991 I was unex- pectantly surprised at receiv- ing a Life Membership in the Association of Kinsmen Clubs of Canada. What an honor! My fellow members of the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry had nominat- ed me for the position, arranged a dinner, dance and reception in my honor. It was a might in which I will always remember. Unbelievable! The club brought my family, friends, co-workers and fellow Kin from across our association together for that evening. I was in shock! Usually I'm not the greatest at public speaking, but I was definitely tongue-tied that night. When a person joins a ser- vice-oriented organization or becomes a volunteer worker, they do so, for numerous rea- sons. I originally joined Kin, for the wrong reason. I joined be- cause I was unable to say no. Af- ter living in Blackstock for about a year, a couple of neigh- bors who were members of the Port Perry club continuously bugged me to attend meetings. I finally relented, went to a few meetings and joined in the fall of 1983. My main reason for joining was for fear of alienat- ing my now, good friends and neighbors. Now, almost 10 years later, I am still in disbe- lief of being made a Life Mem- ber of the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry last year. Thinking back on the years I have been in- volved in Kinsmen, I know that the association and the Kins- men Club of Port Perry has giv- en far more to me than I have giveninreturn. I knew nothing of service work and volunteering one's time to help better the commu- nity in which one lives. I learned as time went on and be- gan to understand what the Kinsmen Association's Aims and Objects from our Constitu- tion Bylaws states so simply: The object of the association shall be to promote and direct fellowship among young men in Kinsmen clubs and young wom- en in Kinette clubs of good char- acter within Canada, to the end that: - 1. They may enjoy personal de- velopment through Kin; - 2. They may be improved and educated in modern business and professional methods and ethics; - 3. the interest of each in the welfare of their community may be stimulated; - 4. constitutional authority may be upheld; - 5. a spirit of co-operation, tol- erance, understanding and equality among all nations and peoples be fostered and stimu- lated and that unity of thought and purpose throughout Cana- da be established toward this goal; and, - 6. they shall carry on service work within their community. Because of our association Aims and Objects the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry has helped me develop into a better person. As a new member I was terri- fied of getting up and speaking in front of an audience. I now, (though I still dislike it) am able to speak in front of a full room of people. I've learned to chair a meeting, chair a major service project, prepare full scale bud- gets, write effective letters, or- ganize successful dances, run and win election campaigns, host a convention, help con- struct a park, create an award winning bulletin, debate under proper rules and orders, and keep full financial records. This list is minuscule compared to what I've gained from Kin. It represents only a portion of how Kin has helped in my personal development. Being a commuter, one usual- ly does not have a lot of time to associate and become close friends with one's co-workers due to the time involved in trav- elling. The people in Kinsmen naturally become your best friends. It has also been a way of meeting other people who share in your beliefs about caring about where they live. It is a great feeling, knowing if I have ever needed something or have a problem, all have to do is pick up the phone and friends that I have met because I am a mem- ber of the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry, will be there for me. Friends that I can always count on! When I have been sick, Kinsmen have always been first with a card and a cheerful tele- phone call and gift. When my wife Deb and I brought our new baby daughter home from the hospital for the first time, we ar- rived to a brightly decorated house covered in balloons and ribbons and signs. Imagine our surprise! Again our friends in Kinsmen. Kinsmen is an organization for young men between the ages of 21 and 45. I am getting closer to the Big 40. Being a member who is near the upper age limit in an association has its bene- fits. It is great to step aside, watch new younger members with fresh ideas, enthusiasm and ambitions come to the fore- front in our club. I get a good feeling watching the newer guys develop. It happened to me without my realization. It is happening to them now. Ten years from now my fellow younger Kin will have the chance to sit back and reflect on how Kinsmen helped in their friendships and personal devel- opment. The extra bonus is helping in the community, whether it be raising funds for the hospital, sponsoring sports teams, giving to the food bank or volunteering income tax services for seniors. The people you are helping, ben- efit, and you feel great about yourself. I thank the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry for the supreme com- pliment they have paid me, by making me a Life Member of He'll always be a Kinsmen the Association of Kin Clubs. I am still involved, still attending meetings and enjoy working on fundraising projects. Port Perry is a tremendous place to live! I know our club is a vital contrib- utor to this community and to all of Scugog Township. As a Life Member I want to continue to be involved and will do so. The only difference in being a "Life Member" is that no matter where life takes me and my fam- ily; whether it be 10 or 30 years from today, I will always be a Life Member of the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry!
