"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Stayner claims series at home MoJacks eliminated as they drop fifth game 7-2 By Al Bailey STAYNER - The hockey season of 1991-92 came to an end here Satur- day night for the Port Perry Mo- Jacks, who were eliminated four games to one by the Stayner Siskins in the all-Ontario Junior 'C' semi- finals. The Siskins coasted to a 7-2 vic- tory in the fifth game of the series, due mainly to an unanswered four- goal splurge in the first period, and a four-point night (one goal and three assists) by their scoring leader Steve Walker. Port Perry's top marksman, Clair Cornish, was kept off the scoresheet, thanks to the superb goaltending by the Siskins' netminder Kevin Crotty, who made some seemingly unbelievable saves. And despite allowing seven goals, Marc Dekker also made some spec- tacular stops. But when your team is trying to play catch-up hockey and pressing deep in opposition ter- ritory, three-on-one rushes often oc- cur, and as a consequence, they're difficult, if not almost impossible to defend. Down by four goals after the first period, the MoJacks struck back early in the second with a power- play effort by Jim Vernon, assisted by Brad Menzies and Kevin McIn- tyre, during a scramble at the side of the Siskins' net. But the Stayner club, virtually unbeatable in their own rink which has a noticeably smaller ice sur- face, rebounded for two more goals, taking a 6-1 lead into the dressing room after two periods of play. The third period was a fairly even- ly contested affair in the scoring department with only one goal a piece. Livingstone notched his se- cond goal of the game at the 5:55 mark, and at the mid-way juncture, Paul Wilkins, from Menzies and Peter Young, closed out Port Perry's scoring for the game and for the season. Power Plays The Siskins made good on two out of six power-play opportunities in this game, while the MoJacks could only retaliate for one power-play goal in nine attempts. That basically was the story of the series as Stayner racked up 14 goals while the MoJacks were short- handed. And conversely, the MoJacks managed to score only four goals in the three games played at the Stayner Community Centre. Good Season The MoJacks certainly have no reason to hang their heads. They did, in fact, have a very good year, capturing the Central Ontario championship in a hard fought play- off series with Little Britain Mer- chants, and then knocking off the Eastern Ontario champion Ernestown Jets in the all-Ontario quarter-finals. And by making it to the 'final four" of all Junior 'C' teams in the province, they provided Port Perry fans with an exciting brand of hockey this season. Championship Round The Siskins must now wait for a winner to be decided in the other semi-final series between Belle River and Dundas before the all- Ontario championship round can begin. At last report, this series was deadlocked at two games a piece.
