Demand continues to increase for five percent downpayments Interest in Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's "First Home Loan Insurance" in- itiative continued to build in its second month of op- eration, Elmer MacKay, Minister responsible for CMHC announced recent- ly. Since its inception on Feb. 3, over 12,600 Cana- dian households have made use of First Home Loan Insurance to pur- chase their first house with a down payment as low as five per cent. This represents over a quarter of all homeowner loans which CMHC has insured to date this year. The total value of First Home loans is almost $1.2 billion. "The response has been tremendous," said Mr. MacKay. "The lower downpayment program was clearly the boost needed by renters to enter the world of homeowner- ship." "We are especially pleased that a large por- tion of the first-time home buyers are spending only 24 per cent of their in- comes, well below the CMHC limit of 35 per cent, on mortgage pay- ments, taxes and heat. This indicates the pro- gram is assisting prudent consumers who have suffi- cient income to carry a mortgage, but who have been postponing home- ownership because they didn't have the necessary downpayment," Mr. MacKay said. To date, 89 per cent of First Home loans are for existing houses. The high volume of sales in the ex- isting market is also ex- pected to generate a sub- sequent increase in new home activity across the country as the spring building season begins.
