ht 10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Tuesday, April 21, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" The Proud to be Canadian Tour is just around the corner, and as the patriotic feeling heightens towards July 1, many Scugog residents are going to be flying Canadian flags. Here are the rules for flying the Canadian flag. The Canadian flag was approved by Parliament and on Feb. 15, 1965 proclaimed by Her Majesty The Queen. It is described as a red flag of the proportions two by length and one by width, containing in its cen- tre a white square the width of the flag, bearing a single red maple leaf. It is appropriate for the Canadian flag to be flown or displayed properly. The flag may be displayed flat or flown on a staff. If flat, it may be hung horizontally or vertically. If it hangs vertically against a wall, the flag should be placed so that the up- per part of the leaf is to the left and the stem is to the right as seen by spectators. The flag may be flown or displayed in a church, auditorium, or other meeting places. When us- ed in the chancel of a church or on a speaker's platform the flag should be flown to the right of the clergyman or speaker. When used in the body of a church or auditorium the flag should be flown to the right of the audience or con- gregation. The flag should not be us- ed to cover a speaker's table or be draped in front of the platform; nor should it be allowed to touch the floor. If displayed flat against the wall at the back of a platform, the flag should be above and behind the speaker. When used on the occasion of unveiling a monument, tablet, pic- ture, etc., the flag should be proper- ly draped and prevented from fall- ing to the ground or floor. In a procession, where several flags are carried, the Canadian flag should be in the position of honor at the marching right or at the centre front. No flag, banner or pennant should be flown or displayed above the Canadian flag. Flags flown together should be ap- proximately the same size and flown from separate staffs at the same height. The Canadian flag should be given the place of honor when flown or displayed with other flags: - When two or more than three flags are flown together, the Canadian flag should be on the left as seen by spectators in front of the flags. If a number of countries are represented, the Canadian flag may be flown at each end of a line of flags. - When three flags are flown together, the Canadian flag should occupy the central position, with the next ranking flag to the left and third ranking flag to the right, as seen by spectators in front of the flags. - Where more than one flag is flown and it is important to hoist or lower them at the same time, the Cana- dian flag(s) should be hoisted first and lowered last. When a flag becomes worn, noticeably faded or otherwise unfit for service, it should be disposed of privately by burning. The position of the flag when fly- ing at half-mast will depend on its size, the length of the flag staff and its location, but as a general rule, the centre of a flag should be exact- ly half-way down the staff. When hoisted to or lowered from half-mast position, a flag should first be rais- ed to the masthead. The Canadian flag is the proper national colors for all Canadian ships and boats including pleasure craft. The Canada Shipping Act pro- vides that a Canadian ship shall hoist the flag on a signal being made to her by one of Her Majesty's ships, or any ship in the service of and belonging to the Government of Canada; on entering or leaving any Rules for flying a Canadian flag foreign port; and if of 50 tons gross tonnage or upwards, on entering or leaving any Commonwealth port. The following rules govern mer- chant vessels and pleasure craft as a matter of custom: - The flag should be worn in harbour and in territorial waters but need not be worn while under way on the high seas unless the vessel wishes to identify her nationality to another ship. - Wherever possible, the proper place for a vessel to display the na- tional colors is at the stern, except that when at sea, the flag may be flown from a gaff. - When in harbour the flag should be hoisted at 0800 hours and lowered at sunset.
