Doug Vaughan, manager of Canada Post's retail network, York division, says the final de- cision concerning the location would be made in less than a month. Canada Post is currently evaluating the applicants for the retail contract. Although Mr. Vaughan could not reveal specifics, he says there have been "three to four locations" which have expressed an inter- estin the contract. Mr. Vaughan says they have been "very satisfied with all the applicants," describing them as all "very solid businesses." He said that although Cana- da Post had established a crite- ria for the outlet, all the appli- cants have exceeded the requirements. He said final as- sessment of the businesses is being conducted including a credit check. The criteria includes; accessi- planned ward. Mr. Vaughan says although the decision to close the post of- fice has been met with some amount of resistance, he be- lieves once it is firmly estab- lished the residents will see the benefits. "It's going to work," he told the Port Perry Star. Mr. Vau- ghan pointed to the extended hours as a major attraction of the new business. "Given a chance, you're going to find it is a good system," he told a group of about 100 resi- dents at a recent public meet- ing. The decision to close the post office was met with some resis- tance from the residents at the meeting, who didn't understand why the office was being closed.
