This ad quoted the 1992 United Nations Human Development Report that rates Canada as the Num- ber 1 place to live in when fac- tors such as: life expectancy, av- erage level of education, and per capita income are taken into ac- count. While I agree that Canada is a wonderful place to live, the ad conveniently fails to mention that when the quality of Cana- dian women is factored in, Can- ada drops to Number 8 in the rating. It is interesting to note that some of the partners of Canada 125 Corporation include Cana- dian Airlines and Canadian Tire - members of More Jobs Co- alition; Deloitte & Touche Inc. and Imperial Oil (Esso} - mem- bers of Project Economic Growth. These two well heeled lobby groups are currently wag- ing a battle to prevent the pro- posed amendments to the Onta- rio Labor Relations Act from being passed. These amendments would af- fect not your stereotypical Tunchbucket union guys' or your 'guccied and rolexed busi- nessman' but society's most vul- nerable and disadvantaged workers - women. Women, who now make up approximately half of the workforce, and earn only 67 cents on the male dollar. Women are for the most part unorganized - only one-fifth of them are compared to one-third of men; unorganized women earn approximately 26 per cent less than organized women. Fe- male workers have at least three things in common: they are underpaid, they are under- employed for the skills and edu- cation they possess, and they are largely ignored by orga- nized women, labor unions and public policy makers. Who could forget the loath- some manoeuvres by a Canadi- an department store chain {which is celebrating its 123rd anniversary this year} against its sales clerks almost a decade ago. The anti-scab legislation should prevent a repeat of the intimidation and powerless- ness that workers of this vener- able establishment felt when supervisory staff from branch stores were brought in to re- place them during a strike. The members of Canada 125 Corporation should think twice before they pat themselves on the back for being Number 1. All workers should contact her or his provincial representative and request a copy of the pro- posed Labor Relations Reforms and a list of the companies that are lobbying against the amendments. You may find that your employer is on that list and railing against doing the right and decent thing.
