Dana Forder, a Port Perry resident and third-year student in the Jewelry Arts program at George Brown College, entered the Zinc Expo '92 Jewelry Com- petition in March. The competition was open to all of the college's students in the jewelry program -- the only program ofits type in Canada. The objective was to fashion a piece of jewelry or a decorative collector's item using a zinc al- loy or zinc sheet. The item had tobe reproducible and original. The contest was sponsored by numerous Canadian zinc pro- ducing companies who joined forces to showcase their metal to the world by sponsoring the zinc facade of the Canada Pavil- ion. Two facades, totaling 3,200 square metres, are covered with one metre by one metre sheets of preweathered zinc. Approxi- mately 50 tonnes of zinc was used. Designed by Bing Thorn Ar- chitects of Vancouver, the Can- ada Pavilion is one of the most distinctive zinc-clad structures in the world. Miss Forder spent a day de- signing her entry which was a miniature replica of the Canada Pavilion with a background. On April 10 she received word that her piece had been selected as the winner. She received a $300 cash prize. In aletter to Miss Forder, Ste- phen Wilkinson, general man- ager of Cominco Ltd. wrote, "Congratulations on winning 1st place in our Expo '92 Zinc Day Jewelry Competition. Your entry was extremely creative and an excellent representation of zinc and the Canada Pavilion, Expo '92. Her miniature will be dis- played at the Canada Pavilion on Zinc Day and 500 copies of the design will be given as Zinc Day gifts to the pavilion's V.I.P. guests. A photograph of Miss For- der's piece, along with all of the other entries, will be printed in the Cominco Metals World mag- azine which is distributed worldwide. "IT never really went in any contests before," Miss Forder told the Port Perry Star. "I guess I picked the right one to go in. "Some things just seem to work," she said in reference to the way the piece came together while she was workingonit.
