Cawker Public School in Tri-Ministry project The Durham Board of Educa- tion is participating in a tri- Ministry project designed to look at the effectiveness of dif- ferent types of school-based strategies to improve behavior- al adjustment, strengthen in- terpersonal competence and im- prove academic performance. The project is funded by the Ministries of Health, Communi- ty and Social Services and Edu- cation, and by 11 boards of edu- cation across Ontario. It is co- ordinated by a research team 'from McMaster University, Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals. Each board has established a local work team with represen- tatives from the board and local agencies, and has identified six of its schools to participate. The project began in Sep- tember 1990 and will conclude at the end of the 1995-96 school year. S.A. Cawker was selected to take part in the project. Other target schools in Durham in- clude Lakewoods P.S., Dr. C.F. Cannon P.S., Queen Elizabeth P.S., Westney Heights P.S. and Glengrove P.S. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 will be involved. The study will consist of three intervention strategies. A So- cial Skills/Behavior Manage- ment Training Program is in- tended to increase student's self-esteem, social skills and readiness to learn. A Parent Management Training Pro- gram is designed to help par- ents of high-risk children devel- op the skills to reduce socially- aggressive behavior and con- duct problems. An Academic Support Program should in- crease children's skills in think- ing and reading. The first two programs are being offered this year and next year at Westney Heights P.S. All three programs will be of- fered over the next two years at Lakewoods P.S.
