---- -- -------------- een IRANI. "A Famlly Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 12, 1992 - 15 program benefits disabled children By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Since February, Nicholas He- rold has been climbing aboard a horse and going for a couple of turns around the arena. While this is not unique for children to be riding horses, in his case it is different. Nicholas, age 2, has cerebral palsy, affect- ing his muscular co-ordination. But through T.R.A.C.K,, (The Therapeutic Riding Association for Challenged Kids), Nicholas and other physically challenged youngsters receive therapy while on the horse's back. Dee Cuthbertson, owner of Springwood Stables in Ux- bridge, says the lessons are de- signed to best suit the individu- al child with a strong emphasis placed on creating high levels of motivation and self-esteem. Through consultation with a local physiotherapist, Mrs. Cuthbertson develops a pro- gram with the needs of the child of mind. Mrs. Cuthbertson's knowledge of horses comple- ments . the physiotherapist's technical knowledge. The natural movement of the horse aids in correcting the youngster's movements and balance. Mrs. Cuthbertson says it brings the child's muscle tone to normal levels, by "re- channelling the brain." Donna Herold says it is more than just therapy to the chil- dren. It is also an enjoyable ex- perience. Mrs. Herold notices a big change when a child such as Nicholas gets on a horse, face beaming with a smile. "They will do different things on a horse that they normally wouldn'tdo," she says. Mrs. Herold says when Nicho- las first began the program, he was not too enthusiastic, but now she says he can't wait to get back on the horse. Due to the delicate condition of the children, the program has strict regulations and safety re- quirements. Three volunteers accompany each rider, one act- ing as a leader while the other two serve as side riders. The horses also are put through a comprehensive train- ing program before they can be used. The program began in the spring of 1987 when a local mothers support group pro- posed the idea. It is a non-profit organization with charitable status. The parents pay a nomi- nal fee for the use of the horses and facilities and the rest is funded through donations and fund raising activities. It is also recognized by the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Associa- tion. Due to the number of volun- teers required, Mrs. Cuthbert- son says there is always a need for new volunteers to join the or- ganization. In an effort to raise much needed money, T.R.A.C.K. will be holding its third annual Ride-a-thon on June 14. It will wind 22 kilometres through the Durham Forest in Uxbridge. All money raised during the after- noon will go towards the organi- zation. On TRACK Week from May 17-23 The Therapeutic Riding Asso- ciation for Challenged Kids (Ux- bridge) is sponsoring "On T.R.A.C.K. Week" between May 17 and May 23, 1992. T.R.A.C.K. is a registered charitable organization com- mitted to providing horseback riding therapy for physically handicapped, learning disabled and developmentally delayed children. Conveniently located just minutes north of Uxbridge, the Association provides pro- grams serving children from throughout Durham and York regions and relies on communi- ty support to operate. This com- munity support ensures that the benefits and joys derived from riding a horse are not ex- clusive domain of the physically fit and financially advantaged. During the week of May 17 to May 23 T.R.A.C.K. will have a display in the front window of Star Office Products on Brock Street in Uxbridge. We hope that people will take advantage of this opportunity to become more familiar with therapeutic riding and its benefits to a wide range of children. Without the generous help of volunteers, the T.R.A.C.K. pro- grams cannot run. Therapeutic riding is unique in the broad spectrum of benefits which it provides to challenged children - social, psychological and phys- ical, however, it is also one of the most 'volunteer intensive' therapies existing. Often, three people are needed to help with each child riding - one to lead the horse, and one on either side to offer support and encour- agement. We urgently need more volunteers at this time, and ask anyone who has a love for horses and children, and a few hours to spend each week, to contact T.R.A.C.K. Become a T.R.A.C.K. volunteer and have the advantages of fresh air and exercise while providing a much needed helping hand to chal- lenged children.
