Merchant Midgets are hot as they win two Weather's Cool - Midgets Are Hot! This week's sports report for the Merchant Midget Fastball Team is sponsored by R.B. Moase and by Ives Florists. Even though the weather has been cool, the Merchant Mid- gets are off to a hot start, hav- ing beaten Scarborough and Markham in the first two league games. Another positive that comes with the cool even- ings at the ball park is the ab- sence of the pesky mosquitoes which will come soon. We are fortunate in Port Perry to have our diamonds playable so early in the season, as the ball parks in the other centres are still un- available for league play. On Monday, Port hosted the Scarborough Reds and won 4-2 on a strong pitching effort by Chad Venning and Jeff Card. Both struck out five batters and walked none. In the third in- ning, ' Scarborough threatened when they scored one, ahd a man on first and third with none out. Fortunately, Port exe- cuted an exciting triple play to get themselves out of the in- ning. Jason McBride caught the fly ball in centre field for the first out, then made a perfect throw to catcher Scott MacLen- nan, tagging out the runner from third for the second out. Scott threw to Jason Cochrane at first who tagged the runner off the bag for the third out. In the second game on Thurs- day, Port hosted Markham, and beat them with a 6-3 score. Jeff kept the batters off-guard by striking out eight and walking only two. In the fourth, he had to strike out four batters in a row, as one reached first on a passed ball. Chad provided three innings of relief by strik- ing out two, walking one, and allowing one hit. Markham showed a little life in the 7th in- ning when they scored two runs and left a man on third, but Port was in control all the way. Cochrane. nine at bats, two Hitters for the week were.
