Current Ministry of the Envi- ronment standards stipulate that the discharge must be 0.3 milligrams perlitre of water. "It is unlikely that expansion of the lagoon is acceptable," Mr. Oliver said. He says they are leaning to- wards a mechanical plant which has the capabilities to purify the water. Economics will be a major fac- tor in the decision making pro- cess. A total of $8.5 million has -- ~~ been earmarked for the four- year project. Approximately $7 million will be spent in 1994 and 1995 when the bulk of the con- struction will take place. The project is being funded by the Region of Durham, but Mr. Oliver says it won't cause a tax increase. It will be based on a user pay system and money will also be acquired from lot levies. Scugog's Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie, who is also Works Committe Chairman, says the mechanical system "seems the most logical way to go. Symes - 416-649-5141 Tite The Region of Durham is in the planning stages of increasing the capacity of Port Perry's Water Pollution Control Plant. Gabe Oliver, Region of Durham's manager of Utilities and Projects, represented the region at a public meeting in Port Perry on May 6. She says the lagoon system "is impossible "due to space lim- itations. But whatever system is cho- sen, Councillor Christie says she is "anxious to see some start-up." She notes that expan- sion or intensification of Port Perry is limited until this is completed. Councillor Christie says the Works Committee will be debat- ing the issue later this year and predicts a final decision in about a year.
