"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 20, 1992 - 11 Letters to the editor Ad campaigns part of drug costs? To The Editor: Pay Attention Canadians! If you are watching your T.V.s these days you will note that the pharmaceutical companies are spending a lot of money on advertising to convince us they are spending a lot of money to research for new cures to the diseases that we are all dealing with these days. The cost of this massive media campaign will most assuredly be factored into the cost of our future drugs and media is expensive. At this point they already have a 10 year right to charge whatever they wish for drugs they develop and no one can copy it generically. They are lobbying for another 10 years to be added to the 10 they already have. If they are successful, plainly put, this will mean that for 20 years they can charge whatever they want for any drug they 'develop'. And you can be sure they will be factoring in the cost of their media cam- paign. That looks pretty benign at this point but itis not. There is no cure for anything which is developed in isolation. Consider what we as Canadians have already paid into cancer research for instance. There are probably very few of us who have not either bought a daffo- dil, button, canvassed door-to- door or made a donation at our own doors. If you didn't support our own precious Terry Fox I'd like to hear from you as to why you didn't. He was ours and drew us together as a nation to try and fight cancer. Consider a researcher who has worked for years at the Ca- nadian Cancer Society at our expense being hired away from us by a branch U.S. pharmaceu- tical company. He/she takes with them the knowledge that they already have developed. Bingo! The cure is found and be- cause that 'magic bullet' has been developed in a in pharma- ceutical co. out of another coun- try, but here in Canada we Ca- nadians will have to pay whatever price they choose to charge for it. Generically it will not be possible for anyone to make it for us. Even if The Ca- nadian Cancer Researchers found the same cure the day af- ter the independant drug co. Those of us who could af- ford the price would have ac- cess to that cure or magic bullet but those of us who could not af- ford it would not have access to it as it might be cost prohibi- tive. This has nothing to do BELLEVIEW tHE IEA] Eb bt bl el ed ed QUESTRIAN CENTRE with our provincial health pro- grams. Here in Ontario we do not have coverage for drugs we need under our provincial health care unless we are elder- ly or already on social assis- tance of some type. Those of us who are not working do not even have access to company drug benefits. Speak up! Call your M.P.P. or your M.P. or write to Health and Welfare. Open your mouths and care about each other and our future genera- tions of Canadians. Be a caring, clean fighting Canadian.
