"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 20, 1992 Building permits up but values are down Although the number of building permits for April is up over last year, the value of the permitsis still lagging. According to the Township of Scugog's Building Permit Re- port, 36 permits were issued in April 1992 at a value of $1,331,400. For the same month last year only 33 permits were issued, but the value was $1,698,200. Single family dwellings led the way in April with seven new dwellings constructed valued at $1,008,300. This is up from April 1991's figure of six per- mits at $975,400. In the alterations and addi- tions department for single fam- ily dwellings, 12 permits were issued in April at a value of $161,500, compared to 11 per- mits valued at $246,200 for the same monthin 1991. Industrial buildings, which include agricultural and indus- trial buildings, remained con- stant at one new addition val- ued at $32,000. This is up from $24,0001ast April. Although the number of in- dustrial additions and altera- tions increased to three, the val- ue decreased to $11,000 from April 1991's figure of $25,000. No new commercial permits were acquired in April 1992. In April 1991, one permit valued at $200,000 was acquired. One permit for alterations and addi- tions was purchased in April valued at $2,000, this is down dramatically from April 1991's figure of $45,000. Year-to-date figures showed a decline in both value and num- ber of permits. Year-to-date figures to the end of April show that 60 per- mits, valued at $2,764,600, were issued in the first four months of 1992. This is down from last year's total for the same period of 62 permits total- ling $3,458,840. A positive sign for 1992 is the increase in the number of indus- trial buildings constructed this year. A total of five permits, with a value of $542,000, were issued in the first four months of 1992. For the same period in 1991, only one permit worth $24, 000 was issued. Industrial additions also showed improvement over last year's year-to-date figures. Al- though only four permits were issued in both years, 1992's fig- ure of $211,000 was a substan- tial increase over 1991's figure of $90,000. No commercial permits have been issued so far this year. Last year only one permit valu- ing $200,000 was issued to date. Commercial addition permit values saw a dramatic drop over last year's figures. Three per- mits have been issued to date in 1992 with a value of $13,500. This is down from last year's value of $78,000. A total of three Institutional and Government building per- mits were issued for the first four months last year, with a value of $817,000. Community Care helped 100 new clients in 1 991 By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Community Care volunteers spent more than 8,000 hours serving 349 clients this year. Currently Community Care has 387 clients on file and 150 volunteers on file, these figures have both increased over last year's totals. This year 100 new clients and 27 new volunteers were wel- comed and 34 clients, and 14 volunteers were discharged. In 1991, Scugog Community Care volunteers completed 13,040 tasks, up from 1990's to- talof 11,987. The Meals on Wheels service is increasingly in higher de- mand. In 1991, 4,091 meals were delivered in 1991 com- pared to 3,783 last year. Community Care offers a range of services to the public. The following is a breakdown of the hours spent by volunteers and the number of tasks for spe- cific services provided by volun- teers. Volunteers performed 4,016 transportation calls requiring more than 3,000 hours, 130 home maintenance tasks in 123 hours, 95 home help calls in 219 hours, 2,137 telephone reassu- rance totalling 114 hours, 1,317 information and referrals re- quiring 66 hours, 54 errands and escorts for 71 hours and 41 income tax and financial coun- "Dorothy Imperial Community Care Administrator cellingcalls requiring 41 hours. Friendly visitor tasks have more than doubled since 1991. In 1990-91 volunteers made 79 visits compared to 162 in 1991- 92. Foot care tasks totalled 516 this year up from 463. Because of increased need for foot care, Foot Care Clinics will be in- creased beginning in June.
