Local girls win dance scholarships to ballet seminar in California By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Three local girls have re- ceived scholarships to the D.E.A. Ballet Seminar and Competition in Palm Desert, California in July. Sarah Breen, Amanda Smith and Katie VanCamp, from Scu- gog Township are members of the In-Ta Kids Dance Company of the Studio of Arts and Dance of Whitby. Recently the girls had two very successful weekends of competition. On May 2 and 3 in Toronto with the Dance Educa- tors of America Katie won a sil- ver medal in the Junior Solo Ballet, Sarah claimed the bronze in the Junior Solo Lyn- cal and Amanda won silver in the Teen Solo Tap. Sarah and Amanda were also members of the Senior Tap Group which won gold. The following weekend, the In-Ta Kids Company competed at Showstoppers at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre which featured more than 1,200 acts. Katie once again captured first place for her Ballet Solo and finished sixth overall. The Junior Ballet Group finished ninth overall. Amanda and Sarah won first for their Ballet Trio and Ballet Group. Many other Scugog Township residents are members of the Studio of Dance and Performing Arts and the In-Ta Kids Dance Company. The following is a list of Port Perry students' results from the Royal Academy of Dancing Ballet. Les and Grace farmed for many years south of the village and raised three sons, Don, Bryan and Grant. When they retired they moved to Prince Albert but now live in Port Perry. About 200 friends and family attended to extend their best wishes to this popular couple. Thursday evening 12 tables of euchre players enjoyed an- other evening of cards. We were honored to have Mrs. Pat Beach, U.C.W. Presi- dent, Bay of Quinte Conference, asour guests speaker. The musical entertainment consisted of a solo by Debbie Batten, a duet by Sharmen Porter and Debbie Batten, a vio- lin duet by Donna Gribben and Anne Franklin, and of course our own choir who sang "Thank God For The Promise of Spring." The highlight of the May 23 day was a surprise presentation of U.C.W. Life Membership pins to Helen Duff and Jean Stachow, for their dedication of many years. Rev. Glen Eagle closed the service with benedic- tion. Refreshments were served. During this 150th anniver- sary year, the members are planning more events begin- ning with a church supper on June 20 followed by a special serviceondJune 21. Although the services cease for the months of July and Au- gust, the women are diligently working on plans for several more special celebrations begin- ning in September.
