According to Ross Stevenson, Durham MP, the number of peo- ple living in the federal constit- uency of Durham, which makes up only a small portion of Dur- ham Region, increased dramati- cally. In a five-year period from 1986 to 1991, the constituency increased by 27.3 per cent. The 1991 population was 119,575 up from 93,897 in 1986. The federal riding now has 40,815 individu- al dwellings. The numbers are from the 1991 census conducted in early June. "Canada's 1991 census is con- firming what many of us in Dur- ham already suspected -- we live in one of our country's fast- est growing areas," Mr. Steven- son said in a press release. The City of Oshawa realized the highest rate of growth among metropolitan areas with an 18 per cent growth rate. In June 1991, the Oshawa area population was 240,104, this is an increase of 36,561 from the 1986 figure. The growth rate of Metropoli- tan Toronto was 13.4 per cent, and Montreal was seven per cent. Among the fastest growing municipalities with more than 25,000 residents, the Town of Newcastle ranked fifth with a growth rate of 45.2 per cent. This was ahead of Pickering's growth rate of 40.2 per cent, but somewhat behind Ajax's 56.9 per cent figure. Canada's two largest growing municipalities were Richmond Hill at 71.4 per cent and Vau- ghan 71.2 per cent. In 40 years the population of Canada has almost doubled. In 1951 the population was 14 mil- lion people. Today the popula- tion of Canada is 27,296,859. This is a 7.9-per cent jump in five years. "Population figures for Cana- da and the provinces offer fasci- nating insights into how our country is changing," Mr. Ste- venson said. The population of Ontario in- creased 10.8 per cent to more than 10 million. Thirty-seven per cent of the population of Canadanow livein Ontario. British Columbia was the fastest growing province with 13.8 per cent. The fastest grow- ing territory was the Yukon which grew by 18.3 per cent. Saskatchewan was the only province to show a negative growth. Its population fell by two per cent. Newfoundland, al- though a positive growth, grew by only 125 people. Quebec's population grew to 6.5 million, but declined as a proportion of the national total over the last five years from 28.9 percent to 25.3 per cent. The first instalment of the 1991 census was limited to pop- ulation counts. Further statis- tics will be released over the next year.
