26 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 26, 1992 Merchant Midgets win gold at St. Catharines tournament This week's sports report is sponsored by Scugog Rental and Pizza Delight. MIDGETS WIN GOLD On the weekend, the Port Perry Merchant Fastball team travelled to St. Catharines and won the gold in the tournament. In game one, Port beat the Scarborough Reds in a tight game with a 2-1 score. Denis Smith pitched four innings, striking out two, allowing only four hits, and allowing one earned run. Jeff Card pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing no earned runs. In game two, Port beat Dun- ville 14-2 with Chad Venning pitching five innings, striking out seven, walking four, allow- ing two hits, and no earned runs. Game three saw the Mer- chants meet Mitchell, an old OASA rival, and beat them 10-1 with Denis Smith pitching six innings, striking out seven, walking one, allowing four hits and one earned run. This record allowed Port Perry to advance to the finals against a strong team from Ha- gersville. This game had every- thing, and was one of the most exciting games which Port has played in many seasons. Both Jeff Card and the Hagersville pitcher threw a scoreless game for seven innings. Going into ex- tra innings, the tournament or- ganizers used the international rule, and the last out from the previous inning was placed at second base to start the new in- ning. In the eighth, Hagersville ¥ \ | x x XX Py X "WN, loot df oN ry NP Xx LIE CEE SN AE EN NN XY & YAONX EX AEN X XX X xX F . - : ~ \ Yi 4 AX AO AUX oi XX ' EEN RE Y SEY i t ¢ vy o¥. Again in the ninth, Ha- gersville scored a run, but Port, with none out and bases loaded scored two to win the tourna- ment gold by a 4-2 score. Excel- lent game saving catches by Ja- son McBride and Jason Cochrane allowed Jeff Card to win the game by pitching nine innings, striking out 12, walk- ing none, allowing only two hits and one earned run. This per- formance earned Jeff the MVP for the tournament. The win- ning results showed excellent effort by all the boys, and this tournament pulled them to- gether as a team. On Tuesday of last week, the Port Merchants travelled to Stroud for a close 2-0 win. Not only did we have to meet some tough pitching, but we also en- countered numerous gigantic mosquitoes who had learned to love bug spray. Denis Smith pitched a strong five innings for the win, striking out three and allowing only four hits and no earned runs. Jeff Card came in as relief and struck out two, walked one and allowed only one hit and no earned runs. The game was tied 0-0 in the top of the fourth when Darrell Vander Slagt led off with a walk, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Laird, and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Scott MacLennon. In the bottom of the fifth, Brad Moase was awarded first on a hard hit pitch to the elbow 7 t yx Ne x 4 x Cv x \ Xs vd - Y RY > SE FEE and had to leave the game. Jeff was the pinch runner and he crossed the plate on an RBI dou- ble by Denis Smith. On Thursday, Aurora visited Port and Chad Venning picked up the win by striking out four, walking one, and allowing only one hit with no earned runs. Again, Jeff came on to pitch two strong innings in relief, striking out four, walking one and allow- ing only one hit with one earned run. This was a close game, with Port leading by only one run going into the bottom of the fifth. Facing a new pitcher, the home side got six hits to score seven runs, and they never looked back. The final tally was 9-2 for Port. "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" 8 * ¢ vo « s Port Perry High School held its annual Athletic Banquet on Thursday evening. Winning "athlete of the year" honors were Tyler Zenon and Meredith Allin. Tyler participated on the boys basketball, volleyball and rugby teams. Meredith played on the girls field hockey, tennis and soccer teams. Taylor Ford Mites crowned B champs at Bramalea tourney On May 23 Port Perry's all star mites fastball team trav- elled to Bramalea for their first tournament of the season. to the surprise of all, the team came together with everyone contributing and left Bramalea with the "B" division champion- ship title. The day started in very hot weather and our rep team was a little slow getting started and lost a nail-biter to Pickering by a 9-8 score. Starter Mark Rich- ardson allowed only two hits but Pickering took advantage of walks to take the win. Tim Jones came in from the bull-pen for his first season appearance on the rubber to record a 3-up- 3-down final inning. Mark, Bra- den Tarbotton and Mike LeFort had hits for Port Perry. Thornhill was our opponent for the second game and after some early inning difficulty in adjusting to the Thornhill pitch- er's unusual delivery our bat- ting eyes came alive in the fourth inning and we coasted to a 15-2 victory. Braden pitched a complete game no-hitter for the win in his first start of the sea- son. Aaron Lycett had a big game at bat with a homer and a triple and Mark Richardson also homered. Sean Jeffrey bat- ted two for two and David Jus- tynski doubled and singled. Mike LeFort clobbered his first season four-bagger in the fourth inning uprising and Tim notched his first safety of the year. Chris Monsma also swat- ted two hits for two RBIs. Dar- ren Miller scored after chipping in a nice hit to add to the Tay- lor-Ford "hit parade". Big Matt Skerratt did a great job behind the plate to share in the "no-hit" success. Out third game of the day was against the favored Stouff- ville squad but our team was very sharp in implementing the defensive skills and base- running skills that they have been working on in practices and we stole a 3-2 victory to set up our appearance in the cham- pionship game. Mark Richardson pitched a dandy one-hitter and was very sharp in notching 10 strikeouts (including one beautiful change-up) and allowed only three walks. Adam Moynes also went the distance behind the plate and was tireless in re- trieving balls in the dirt and in holding runners at their bases. Our improving team defense was displayed in the last inning when Mark fielded a grounder, threw to Tim at first for the out and Tim relayed the ball to Adam at the plate for a double play tag of the runner trying to score from third. Chris, Mark, Braden and Mike had safeties for Port. Darren did a fine job as out-field captain in centrefield. For their fourth game of the day, Port Perry's reps had to face Thornhill again in the "B" championship game. Thornhill had bumped off Willowdale for their chance. Players from both teams (as well as officials and parents!) deserve a lot of credit for their effort in this game which was a real "character- builder) as it was played under very windy, wet and cold condi- tions. Our defense was hot in the first inning however as third baseman Braden snagged a hard-line drive and alertly threw to Chris covering at sec- ond for the double play. Mark started and got the win allow- ing just one hit and striking out seven. Braden played the fire- man when Mark started to tire in the fourth inning. He came on with bases loaded to shut down a Thornhill rally and record two key outs. He went on to register the same on a "1-2-3" final inning.
