Mayor Howard Hall told the Star on Friday that an agree- ment has been drafted by the township's lawyers and sent to the ministry. It is now awaiting areply from the ministry. A large quantity of tires have been stored in a barn on Scugog Island for approximately 18 months. Despite numerous at- tempts to have the tires re- moved by the guilty party in- cluding a legal battle, the township has been frustrated in its attempts. Under the agreement, the Ministry of the Environment will pay 85 per cent of the costs, while the township will pay 15 per cent of the costs. The ministry's chare will be $64,175, while the township will pay $11,325. The costs in- clude hauling the tires to an ap- proved recycling site and the re- cycling costs per tire. Mayor Hall cautions that the figures are only estimates and could change depending on the number of tires. Although it is unknown - exactly how many tires are on site. Under the terms of the agree- ment, the township must recy- cle the tires. "The tires will be disposed of in a very, very environmentally sensitive manner," Mayor Hall said. The ministry has set a time limit of June 15 for the issue to be resolved. A back-up plan has been es- tablished should the agreement fall through.
