4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 26, 1992 Hospital flicks the switch to energy efficient lighting By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Community Memorial Hospi- tal's switch to energy efficient lighting has resulted in a sub- stantial savings, says John Gib- bons, manager of plant mainte- nance and engineering. The hospital has just complet- ed the first phase of a program fv am = ~~ that will see all areas of the hos- pital's energy consumption studied. In this phase of the program, the hospital conducted a light- ing retro-fit in which 60 watt in- candescent bulbs and fixtures were replaced with 13 watt com- pact fluorescent bulbs. This re- sulted in a 47-per cent savings. Community Memorial Hospital has just completed the first phase of a program which sees the facility changing all its lighting to energy efficient units. Christos Misketis, Commer- cial Energy Advisor for Ontario Hydro, says the cost of the pro- am was approximately 7,300. But under the Energy Management Incentive pro- am the hospital qualified for a 25 rebate per fixture. This re- sulted in more than $2,700 be- ing returned to the hospital. Mr. Gibbons says there are many benefits to the new light- ing. They are 80 per cent more energy efficient and last 10 times as long as the incandes- cent lights. Manhours will also be cut dra- matically as they won't have to be changed as often. This will result in an approximate sav- ings of $3,000 per year. But Mr. Gibbons says the real savings will be in kilowatt hours as less hours of electricity will be consumed. It is estimated that the hospi- tal will realize a payback from the initial cost of the program in 1.6 years. Although it is the hospital that sees the direct savings, Mr. Gibbons says the benefits are passed on to the community. "The hospital is working for the community in saving it mon- ey. The first phase of the hospital project included all patient washrooms, utility rooms, staff lounges and wall mounted fix- tures in the hallways. Mr. Gib- bons says the next step is to re- place all fluorescent and mercu- ry vapor lights. Mr. Misketis says a number of local establishments have taken advantage of the program with positive results. These in- clude Immaculate Conception Centre, Emiel's Restaurant, Haugen's and Oshawa General Hospital. fH FRAMING When purchasing one of over 200 different Limited Edition Prints ~~ PRINTS BY ROBERT BATEMAN CARL BRENDERS LAURA BERRY JOHN SERRY-LESTER RON PARKER COLEBROOK KIERSTEAD JOHN NEWBY JOHN BOOTS AND OTHER NOTEABLE ARTISTS STARTS JUNE 1st ) FULL DETAILS IN GALLERY me FRAMER'S GALLERY 237 Queen St., Port Perry, Ont.
