"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" d PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1992 - 33 Capacity crowd at Wingfield's Follies A capacity crowd thoroughly enjoyed Rodd Beattie's presen- tation of Wingfield's Follies on Friday evening at the Recrea- tion Centre. Many local families entertained guests who also at- tended the show. Many from here attended the retirement party and roast in honor of Joan (Venning) Teague held on Friday afternoon at Trillium Valley. Her mother Mrs. Dorothy Venning was picked up and taken to the par- ty in a stretch limo as a surprise to Joan. Congratulations and best wishes, Joan. Craig Paisley of Calgary, Al- berta spent a week with his fa- ther Gord Paisley and other rel- atives and friends. Glad to know that. Tara Tay- lor is home again after a stay in Port Perry Hospital. Congratulations to Karen and Chuck Cole on becoming grandparents and to Mrs. Mar- garet Baumchen on becoming a great-grandmother with the ar- rival of Katlin Marie, Lori and Karl Beer's baby girl. The other first time grandmother is Shir- ley Beer of Brooklin. What a special little girl Katlin will be. On Wednesday, Nancy and Bob Bryans called on her mom and dad Babe and Wilf Brown of Oshawa who celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary that day. Cecil and Marie Gibson en- Joyed a six day bus trip to Nash- ville and Grand Ol Oprey as well as many other points of in- terestin that area. The Sunday School Anniver- sary was held at the United Church on Sunday morning with a fine crowd. Heather McLaughlin conducted the ser- vice with Sandy Churchill and Liz Henderson taking active parts. The excellent message was brought by So-So the Clown. Flowers were in memo- ry of Elva Toms and Annie Dor- rell. Following the service lunch complete with anniversary cake was enjoyed in the C.E. Room. One of our local beef farmers encountered a moose with his herd of cows and calves in mid- morning. Family members in- cluding his wife with her came- ra were able to arrive in time to see and photo this huge animal. The next O.N.O. meeting will be held at Nancy Bryans home on June 11 at 8 p.m. Please bring pictures or a photo album to share with the rest. Congratulations to Jill Van Camp who recently was award- ed the Adelaide Hoodless Schol- arship in honor of her achieve- ments in 4-H work. One of these groups was the Women's Missionary Society (WMS). This group worshipped togeth- er with devotionals based on a specific mission study and mo- nies raised by the group were given in mission and service. The second group also had monthly devotionals but their monies raised was in aid of the church itself. This group was known as the Womens Associa- tion {WA}. Our church in Port Perry also had a third group called the Service Club. This was a group of younger women who got together to support each other and also help out the other two groups. The UCW as we know it today is a combination of all aspects of these groups best described through the UCW Purpose: To unite all the women of the con- gregation for the total mission of the church, and to provide a medium through which they may express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian Witness, Study, Fel- lowship and Service. The Port Perry UCW consists of six units, each meeting once monthly for fellowship through a short program and devotional. All units join at the general business and general program/ devotional meetings which al- ternate monthly. The first president of the Port Perry UCW was Mrs. Mae Leask followed by these capable leaders: Dora Dowson, Verna Griffen/Margaret Cornish, Ver- na Griffen, Mabel Cawker, Jean McDermott, Gladys Joblin, Isa- bel Lee, Joan McNab, Freida Cochrane, Elizabeth Fulford, Barbara Carnegie, Jane Litt and our present co-presidents Barbara Carnegie and Susan Reed. June 10, 1992 will be a special general program/devotional meeting celebrating the 30th year anniversary. All church women are invited to attend this evening of celebration be- ginning at 6:30 p.m. with a pot luck dinner followed by a pro- gram sponsored by the "Mary Unit." Their program is based on the UCW - past/present/ future and will surely prove to be exciting. A special anniver- sary box will be provided for UCW members to donate 10 cents for each year of member- ship. Proceeds will be divided between the Kenyan Women's Project and Mission and Ser- vice. In addition to supporting our own church, we have supported organizations ranging from Op- eration Scugog/food bank to sending peace banners to iden- tify Canadian solidarity with Korean women who in 1995 will be celebrating 50 years since their liberation from the Japa- nese. Thirty years has seen a great change in our women but we still continue to grow spiritual- ly and build on the firm founda- tion layed by the women who united together. Port Perry UCW always welcomes any members to help us to continue to grow in our "loyalty and devo- tion to Jesus Christ in Chris- tian Witness, Study, Fellow- ship and Service." ing a Schumann Piano Concerto accompanied by the CHS Wind Ensemble. This finale promises to be a most unique experience and a fitting farewell to a fine young citizen of the Cartwright area.
