CODON) YE EEE VLEET 2 yen? "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" CCC) Lary! EEE 992-11 By Marnie Luke Port Perry Star Around this time of year, a peek into most high school classrooms would likely dis- close at least one student gaz- ing out the window, daydream- ing of the summer months that lie ahead. But this year, a similar scene would be more apt to depict stu- dents frantically filling out job applications For the past two months, Chris Jellicoe, a Grade 10 stu- dent at Port Perry High School, has been job-hunting. He's applied to virtually eve- ry store in Port Perry, but the familiar "we'll call you" re- sponse has only left his phone silent and his spirits low. The restaurant he worked at last summer told him they were not hiring any more staff this year. "If I don't get a job, I'll prob- ably just end up hanging out with friends and bumming money off my parents," Chris said. He is not alone. Many local students - univer- sity, college, and high school - have found themselves jobless as the summer approaches. Laurie Roman, supervisor of Durham's youth employment centre in Oshawa, said most of the positions available are ei- ther for odd jobs, such as lawn cutting and yard work, or com- mission sales, at which stu- dents don't always earn the minimum wage. - Grade 11 student Tim Fletch- er was one of the few fortunate enough to find himself two sum- mer jobs, but said both involve casual work, which will not pro- vide him with steady, or even guaranteed hours. "Don't hold out for that big paying job. Take what you can get, even if it means doing something you never consid- ered before," Ms. Roman ad- vised students. Even those big paying' jobs that were available in past years are not as prevalant any- more. General Motors' summer pro- gram hires university and col- lege students only. Public relations manager Stew Low said GM has hired approximately 800 students 4-H news By Amanda Bradburn We met again at the Black- stock United Church for our sec- ond meeting. To begin our meeting we went on a short hike around the block. When we got back Mr. Fletcher was there to talk to us about hiking and packing a sack. He told us that your food and clothes should be separated in case your food gets all over your clothes. He also told us some good spots to get pack sacks, hiking boots, compasses, etc. He told us what kind of sleeping bag is the best. He talked to us for about one hour and a half about lots of neat things to do with hiking. At 9 p.m. our meeting was over. To top off our meeting we had popsicles. P.S. If you see Mr. Fletcher congratulate him on the fine work he did at our meeting. this summer. Although this is up over last year's total of 600, he said GM used to hire as many as 1,000 students each summer. "We like to be fair to the stu- dents, but at the same time we have to be realistic and look at the situation from our own business perspective," Mr. Low said. Those who do get hired are certainly more fortunate than those who end up cutting grass, as GM pays the students ap- proximately $19 an hour. Even the one job option most students used to count on in Scugog isn't providing as many jobs as it used to. The Agriculture Employ- ment Service has found there are not as many jobs available this year as in the past. "Many farmers are becoming more machine-oriented, so we won't be as busy this year with job placements," said recruit- AREOCOUPE '92 PONTIAC LEMANS 3 DR 1.6 litre engine, 4 speed manual transmission, reclining bucket seats, intermittent wipers, custom steering wheel & more. x o @ N le). She made presentations at many local high schools, and was overwhelmed by the num- ber of applicants. Miss Philip said there was such a good response, because university students have taken many of the summer jobs nor- mally filled by high school stu- dents. She said those students who are placed at farm jobs through the service cannot count on any type of regular or steady hours. Many of the farms do provide eight-hour work days, but not on a full-time basis. Even those who do have jobs, such as PPHS student Brad Prentice, who works at a local convenience store, can sympa- thize with their unemployed peers. "It's not a case of students not wanting to work. But when there's no jobs out there, they have no choice," Brad said. $8,543.00* BOX PICK-UP '92 GMC SONOMA SPECIAL 6' CARGO 2.5 litre engine, 5 speed manual O/drive transmission, cloth bench seat, 4200lbs., GVW., anti-lock rear brakes, steel belted radial tires, AM radio and more. pls 8 $12,613.00" '92 ASUNA SUNRUNNER CONVERTIBLE 4 wheel drive, 1.6 litre engine, 5 speed manual transmission, alloy wheels, AM/FM cassette & more.
