You cannot expect your merchants to survive when you take away business from their busiest months of the year and give it away to outside vendors who can come in and operate with little or no overhead," Mrs. Kasperski argued. She maintains that if the market is allowed to set up shop, a ripple effect will be felt throughout the entire commu- nity. Jobs will be lost and busi- nesses will be forced to close their doors. Also tax dollars will be lost as the vendors will not be required to pay business taxes. But councillors have a differ- ent opinion on the flea market proposal. Ward 1 Councillor Ken Carruthers, says the mer- chants are failing to see the ben- efits which the flea market could provide. "It's up to the mer- chants to get the customers to buy." Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den also emphasized the point that it could work in their favor as well. "This thing can generate busi- ness for you," he said. "It could be an opportunity for you," add- ing that more shoppers will be drawn to the area. But the merchants see other- wise. "The flea market as a draw for Scugog Anglers want to preserve fishing on Lake Scugog By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Scugog Anglers Associa- tion, formed only one short month ago, is constantly look- ing into ways to help preserve Lake Scugog and the fishing ac- tivity on it. The township recently held a meeting with the Ministry of Natural Resources concerning ice fishing on Lake Scugog, but no firm decisions were made. Dale Irvin, owner of JD Fish- ing and Tackle and member of the Scugog Angler Society told the Star one idea that may help the problem of low fish quantity is to stop the catch and kill tour- naments. Because anglers must keep their catch during these tourna- ments so it can be weighed, more fish are being kept that many fishermen would not nor- _ mally keep, Mr. Irvin said. "The more tournaments that are run the more fish are kept. If these winter tournaments were stopped the level of fish may get a boost," he said. The Scugog Anglers Associa- tion. formed just one short the business community 1s a false promise," Mrs. Kasperski argued. "People are drawn to the area because of the unique downtown shopping experience combined with the attractive waterfront. The negative imag- es it will create is not the type of "draw that will have any positive effects to the businesses already established in town." Despite the merchants' oppo- sition to the flea market, Mayor Howard Hall said council's hands are tied on the situation. He pointed to the fact that there has been no formal application filed concerning the flea market proposal. He noted that until such time, no decision could be made. month ago, began the club with the mandate to clean up the lake and improve pickerel fish- ing. Two weeks ago the associa- tion spent a day cleaning the area around the causeway. This coming weekend the club will be setting out to clean the second causeway area. The association has also come up with another way of helping to keep the lake clean. Accord- ing to Mr. Irvin, they are urging local businesses to adopt a gar- bage pail. Companies can purchase the pail for $30 and have their logo imprinted on one side and the Scugog Anglers' logo will be on the other. The association has already had good response to the idea and are hoping to be able to place the pails on the lake. Also in the works is a conser- vation dinner that will probably be held in the spring. Mr. Irvin said the Angler Association has had meetings with the Ministry of Natural Resources about set- ting up a dinner in the Scugog area, but no firm plans have been made yet. 10026 Remanufactured Toner Cartridges | Guaranteed For Laser printers, PC copiers, Fax machines FREE pick-up & delivery $59.95 & up depending on model Tel: (416) 985-9695 (call collect) / Fax: (416) 985-9706 J.B.K.
