"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 9, 1992 - 35 Taylor Ford Mites "Bs" finalists in tourney On June 6, our fastball mite rep team travelled to Kingston for their second tournament of the season. Once again they rose to the occasion and played well in earning a berth in the 'B' championship game. Game one in the weather- delayed tournament resulted in a 7-2 Port Perry victory over Or- ed defensively by good team- work between catcher Matt Skerratt and pitcher Mark Richardson in the fourth inning as they got all three outs of the inning in tags at home plate. Mark pitched the win on a two hitter and had eight strikeouts. Braden Tarbotton got the save with two strikeouts. Adam Moynes led the offence by get- ting on base three time and scoring two runs. Mike LeFort, Chris Monsma, Mark, David Justynski, and Braden chipped in with hits too. Game two was an 11-2 Tay- lor-Ford victory over the host Kingston team. Braden started on the rubber and recorded the Angels play to 11-11 tie In Durham Ladies fastball league play sunday night, this was a very lively game, lots of action and scoring, as both teams played to an 11-11 tie. Pickering came to town and did battle with the Angels, as both teams failed to score in the first inning. Pickering put to- gether six runs, off nine hits, plus some bad throwing errors in the second, to take an early lead 6-1. Port got one back in their half of the second on Nan- cy McConnell single, over- throw to first, let her get to sec- ond base then Jamie Thorton hit a single to score Nancy. Pickering got none in the third, but the Angels put two runs across to narrow the score, on back to back triples by Gena Spence, and Jackie Dempster, Joyce Parkinson picked up a run batted in the third and From Page 33 made at home for the second out. Scott MacLennon then pro- ceeded to hit a timely RBI sin- gle to win the game 11-10. This was not a pitcher's dream, but Denis Smith did come in for re- lief in the third with a man at third and none out. He proceed- ed to retire the side, pitched five innings with seven strikeouts, two hits allowed, and no earned runs. On Saturday, Port's Midget Merchants were in Bramalea and started the day on a 2-2 tie with Oshawa. This was a close game, with the score standing at 2-1 for Port going into the seventh. Oshawa tied the game on a lead-off walk, two bunts, and a single. In the bottom of the seventh, Moase led off with a single and Smith, as a pinch runner, was able to get to sec- ond with none out. Oshawa's pitcher preserved the tie by get- ting the next three Port batters to fly out. Card recorded the tie by striking out 12, walking none, allowing seven hits but no earned runs. In the second game, Port met the Scarborough Diamonds who had come out on top in both league matches this year. Port was ahead 2-0 on walks by McBride and Vander Slagt, a sacrifice by Todd Smart, and singles by Cochrane and Chad Venning. In the fifth, the Dia- monds closed the gap by one run, but Port sent the insu- rance run in on a lead off single by Moase. Grant Kay went in as a pinch runner and crossed the plate as MacLennan and Van- derligt hit RBI ingles. Smith picked up the win by striking out eight, walking one, allow- ing nine hits but earned no runs. This game closed with an unusual play. Scarborough had runners at first and second with none out. Their batter Pickering came up with one run in the fourth, only to have the Angels get that one right back, as Jamie Thorton walked, then scored on Gena Spence's fly ball to left field. In the fifth inning Pickering failed to score, however the An- gels got themselves right back in the game. Michelle Reader singled, McConnell was hit by a pitch ball, then Jamie Thorton singled, Tracy Smith singled in a run, then Lisa Best tripled, scoring two, Gina Spence trip- led also, to drive home a run, and that was that for the fifth, with the score 9-7 in Scugog fa- VOT. In the sixth Pickering pushed home three runs off four hits, to get back in it, before the Angels got on the score sheet to take the lead again, which was see- popped up and the umpire called the second out on an in- field fly rule. The ball was dropped and as their player ran for third, he was thrown out, for the final out of the game. In the third game, Port was up against Owen Sound and the weatherman Port was losing 3- 0 before the rain stopped the play for about one and one half hours. Once the officials made up their minds and the fields were returned to playing condi- tions, only 45 minutes was al- lowed to finish the game. Port tied in the third on singles by Cochrane, MacLennan, Moase, Smart, and Vanderligt. Owen Sound scored the winning run in the fifth to give them a 4-3 win. Coming second in their di- vision advanced the Midget Merchants to the Consolation Championship against the Scarborough Reds. The weath- erman again refused to co- operate, and it was decided that the Consolation winner would be decided at a regular league sawing back and forth all night. With back to back singles by Reader and Parkinson, then a hit batter by the pitcher, gave Smith a chance to score two on a single. Best was hit by a pitch, and that was it for the night, as the girls failed to score in their half of the seventh, after Picker- ing scored one run to tie the game 11-11. The big hitter for Scugog An- gels were Gina Spence, two triples; Lisa Best had a triple, as did Jackie Dempster. Tracy Smith had three singles, Jamie Thorton, along with Joyce Par- kinson each had two hits. This week the team is in Oshawa to play the Oshawa Double Bs, then next Sunday the Oshawa Stellas come to town. Consolation game to be decided June 16 game on June 16. Chad Ven- ning pitched a strong game, striking out three, walking one, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Hitters for the week and league standings can be found in the "Standings Corner". Games for the next two weeks are: June 9 - Port vs Au- rora 8:30; June 11 - Stroud vs Port 8:30 south diamond; June 16 - Scarborough Reds vs Port 8:30 south diamond; June 17 - Port vs Oshawa 8:30; June 20 - North York Tournament. Note: Games on June 9 and 11 could be rescheduled due to exams. win while allowing only five hits and three walks. Tim Jones and Chris Monsma led the of- fence in going two for two. Aa- ron Lycett reached base safely in all three at bats. Matt had two walks as did Sean Jeffrey, Mike and Mark. The defensive highlight of the game was the result of good backup coverage by Braden on an outfield over- throw at third base as he caught the ball and alertly tagged the runner who strayed past the base. A sluggish start in the early part of game three resulted in a 7-3 loss to Wellington. This was a game played back-to-back to the game versus Kingston. Wellington were successful in taking advantage of walks and passed balls for the win. Mark was collared with the loss al- though allowing only five hits and striking out five. Tim came on in relief with two out in the fourth inning to get the third out on a strikeout. He mopped up the final inning and got two more "K"s. Offensively Darren Miller put his batting practice to work for a nice line drive hit. Adam and Aaron each had a single and a walk. Braden, Chris and Mark notched sin- gles. Our record earned a placing in the 'B' championship game against Stittsville. This was an- other 'character-builder' as our tired troops played their fourth game of the day late in the eve- ning in a game that didn't end till 11 p.m. Most of the players had had a 6 a.m. start to the day! Unfortunately, a hot Stitts- ville pitcher allowed only one hit to defeat Port Perry 11-6. Mark was tired in pitching his third game of the day but man- aged nine strikeouts nonethe- less. He allowed five hits but a tired arm wouldn't listen to the brain and allowed too many walks. Braden mopped up the latter part of the game with four strikeouts. Mark had the only Taylor-Ford hit but im- proving pitch judgement was shown by Matt, Aaron and Tim each of whom earned two walks. Centre fielder Sean Jef- frey and right fielder Mike Le- Fort showed good backup cover- age on their defensive assignments. Overall another gritty effort by our Mite rep team! Keep up that hard work and enthusiasm guys!
