Peter Hvidsten Vandals damage 30 gravestones at Pine Grove Cemetery Youths using the grounds at Pine Grove Cemetery as a place to hang out, drink and party are being blamed for senseless damage to about 30 gravestones last Saturday night in Prince Albert. Cemetery board president Earl Geer who arrived on the scene with secretary/treasurer Glen Wanamaker about 9:30 Sunday morning were appalled with the destruction to many of the old stones. Mr. Wanamaker told the Star he was first alerted of the damage Sunday morning by Dave Tomlinson of the Uxbridge Monument Company, who noticed some headstones toppled over when making a delivery about 8:30 Saturday evening. As Mr. Geer and Mr. Wanamaker began an inspection of the cemetery grounds it quickly became apparent that damage was considerable and widespread. Gravestones were over- turned from an area near the centre of the cemetery into the far north section, where many of the memorials are sheltered by large maple trees and bushes. Neighbours living nearby the cemetery told the Star the cemetery has become a real hangout for youths who use the isolated back area of the cemetery to party and drink. One resident, who wished to remain unnamed for fear of retaliation by the youths, said there was a lot of noise on the cemetery grounds Saturday night. "It's getting out of hand, and many of the. neighbours are afraid to go into the cemetery after 8:30 at night," the witness said. Mr. Geer, who is president of the Ontario Pine Grove Cemetery Cossaid their annual Decoration Day is scheduled to take place in three weeks, but anticipates no problem in being ready in time. The owners of Uxbridge Monument offered their assistance to the cemetery board and were on site early Monday morning to assist cemetery staff in replacing the toppled stones. While the cost to repair damaged stones and lift them back into place was unknown, Mr. Wanamaker said the board did not have much money for this type of incident. Pine Grove Cemetery has been the scene of numerous acts of vandalism over the years, with the most recent large scale damage taking place on Halloween night in 1985 when 28 stones were overturned. Another vandalism spree took place on the night of November 12, 1976, when eighteen gravestones were overturned, causing extensive damage to some of the oldest headstones in the cemetery. An investigation of this latest case of vandalism is underway by Durham Region Police. 183 Queen Mt, Port Penny ADIN Xe | F=2:13.
