"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" _PORT PERRY STAR - - Tuesday, June 16, 1992 - a) Letters fo the editor Understanding the concept of First Nations From Page 9 tional office space, a meeting room, kitchen, washrooms and a hall that will enable us to host meetings for the first time and where the population at the "foot" of the Island will be able to hold their activities (both na- tive and non-native) if they so desire. This "concept" is backed by the current Scugog Township Council as was the survey work necessary to back it up. As for inventing the concept of the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs, its creation meant a bureaucratic system, which has taken funding that should have been made availa- ble to First Nations, in order to pay the salaries of said buteau- crats who then stalled the ef- forts of Native people to make any economic, social or political gains. We're finally getting nid of that system. Mr. Aldred has a "great prob- lem" with a "First Nation con- cept". Here it is. The First Na- tions are the aboriginal groups (such as the Mississauga Na- tion) who originally inhabited this land. We were here first and governed ourselves. We are the First Nations of Canada. It's true that defining Self- Government will be difficult. I said that in my talk. Jurisdic- tion will have to be worked out in tri-partite fashion. But it can be, and I'm optimistic that it will be. People who listen, re- spect, and talk to each other can get things done. I can assure Mr. Aldred that I have nothing personal against him, either. I give him great re- spect. First as a war hero, as a former politician, broadcaster, farmer, entrepreneur and ser- vice worker. On the other hand, I am a very ordinary Native Ca- nadian person (Aboriginal), am attempting to take on a leader- ship role as the Economic De- velopment Officer on my First Nation. That may mean that I also must do service work in this community which is why I spoke to the Historical Society. I may not do this very well, and certainly not as well as Mr. Al- dred does, but I tried. This does not give Mr. Aldred the right to say whatever he wants in print uncontested. I certainly had no intention of offending anyone on May 28 and those present in- dicated to me that I did not. I only hope that the record has been set straight. In closing, I would just add that in my presentation I said nothing about glaucoma. Joel Aldred had told me all about that one day. He knew what he was talking about.
