KELLY LOWN/ PORT PERRY STAR FROM TOPS TO PROPS -- WE DO IT ALL CRE """DETLOR MARINE SERVICES J By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Durham Region Police Services Search and Rescue Unit was in Scugog on Thurs- day for a practice session. The team was diving in Lake Scugog in an area on the north side of the Highway 7A cause- way. The seven-member team is responsible for checking vari- ous areas in the region for stolen property, or evidence that may have been thrown in the lake, according to Detective Stan Pin- kney, dive team leader. The unit also conducts searches for bodies and vehicles in the lake, he added. The divers train on a regular basis, usually once a month. Many times they will do their practice session where some- thing has been reported amiss in the waters. The divers also take upgrading courses to main- tain the level of excellence they have. "We are also available for emergency calls," he added. Other members of the team include Constables Mitch Mar- tin, Clint Cole and Uldis Buks, and Sargeant Rick Bates. The seventh member is Larry Em- merson, a local businessman whois an auxiliary member. Two fishermen had reported having seen something which looked like a human limb float- ing in the lake. The March search was called off when the divers drilled holes in the lake and found the ice to be 27 inches thick. "There was no water, the ice went down into the mud," De- tective Pinkney said. Although the team has searched the same area twice they have found nothing in the lake, except a few anchors, fish- ing lures and a plastic baseball bat.
