In fact it is more of an adventure. For Mr. Phurba, who lives in Thamel, Kahtmandu, Nepal, it is a 40-minute hike from his vil- lage to the nearest watering hole. Mr. Phurba is visiting North America on a 40-day tour of the continent with a friend. He was in Port Perry on June 9 to speak to an enthusiastic group of Scouts from the 1st Port Perry oup. : The 29-year-old native of Ne- pal is a Sherpa guide who oper- ates his own trekking company which offers guided tours of the Himalayan Mountains to tour- ists. For $25 per day he and his team takes a group of approxi- mately 12 adventurous people through the countryside. And while just the thought of hiking through in the Himalay- as and camping under the stars sounds exotic, you should hear the menu. Meals consist of your choice of salads, curry, steaks, breads, fruit, eggs and various beverages. This is all prepared by a complete staff of cooks and porters. In fact all the customer does on the trip is hike, the rest in- cluding carrying the baggage is up to the guides. This is quite an accomplish- ment for the diminutive guide who stands a little more than five feet tall and weighs in around the 120 pound mark. Mr. Phurba says the terrain in the Himalayas is* much the same as trekking in the Rocky Mountains. But that is where the comparison ends. He says the weather is quite different. While it is sunny and warm in Canada, itis the rainy season in Nepal. Atthe end of the 40-day trip to North America, Mr. Phurba wili be heading.back home to begin another season of tours. This is an adventure in itself. He must fly to Kathmandu, take a bus for one day and walk for six to seven more days. It appears Mr. Phurba's trip to Port Perry paid off as he at- tracted at least one adventur- ous person. Larry Emmerson, a local businessman and Scout leader who brought Mr. Phurba to Port Perry, will be heading off to the mountains for two weeks in October. Cadet corps The Cartwright Youth Coun- cil is interested in forming a youth corp. A meeting of interested boys and girls, aged 12 and a half and up, will be held at Caesarea Hall on Sunday,June2l at 1:30 p.m. Parents are asked to attend to see and hear what is involved, learn their role and the support that is needed, and meet those that have volunteered to help. In order to form a cadet corp we need the support of the par- ents. Mr. Phurba was presented with a plaque from the 1st Port Perry Boy Scouts after talking to them at Scugog Memorial Li- brary on June 9.
