At this time of year we conaid- er the life of the farmer upon whom we depend. Even though they may have failed last year, they start again with high hopes. Even in the churches in- terest is increasing the farm. og Island News by Reta Reader The church service with farm- ing in mind took place at the home of Nelson and Betty Read- er. The Liona Club provided a tent in case of' bad weather. Sev- enty or 80 people attended. The iolden Shippers added much life to the service and a groat surprise in their numbers was the attendance of Ethel and Geo Freeman with their happy atti- tudes. Ethel has received much encouraging mail. She is doing PORT PERRY &E PRINCE ALBERT ) UNITED CHURCH Ministers Rev. D. Robert J. LePage, B.A., M. Div. Michelle Hofman, B.A., M.R.E. People were extremely interested in the pig farming operation of Bill Lamb and amazed how he could cover so much planned work by himself. Children enjoyed the welcome by the various dogs. Eighteen mem- bers and two visiting speakers attended. Their motto was "You have to sow, if you wish to reap". Therefore, at this time of ear we think of the father and his family making his plans and working long hours with high hopes. This thought was fol- lowed by the parable of the prodigal son and the forgiving father. Joan Morris read a poem on the same parable. Linda Atkin- son read "Fathers are wonder- ful people" with Father's Day in mind. (This of course may not always seem true when we hear of fathers in third world coun- tries offering their children for sale to interested travellers.) After a short business discus- sion, guests Marilyn Wallace and Howard Wolfe told the members about a course they took in different churches on how to approach people when they care about them. Then vol- unteers were requested to help out so that demonstrations could be made. This of course provided some good illustra- tions as well as a few laughs. The meeting ended with the usual snacks and beverages. The W.1. (Womens' Institute) will meet at the hall June 17 to celebrate Canada's birthday be- fore closing the year in July. All 26 members are requested to attend. If other interested la- dies are questioning their de- sire to attend or join, it is ex- plained that W.1. helps women "to improve their homes and community by working for the good of all, regardless of race, creed or political belief. We hope to see many of you at the museum "Pioneer Days" this coming Saturday and Sun- day. You may see lots of male friends with new beards and find it difficult to recognize them but that all adds to the fun. Of course we are saddened this Monday morning by the two funerals of elderly gentle- men, Frank Bailey of Black- stock and Charlie Brinkman. W.l. meeting to Last Friday's euchre results are: ladies high - Jean Rodd, Jean Hunter and Marlene Bain. Mens - Gary Munro, Harry Hill and Doris Hill playing as a man. The lucky draws were won by Neil Hunter, Mildred Dearborn and George Harper. The next euchre will be held on Friday, July 10. Everyone welcome. Women's Institute meeting will be held on July 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Neil Hunter with Stephanie of Grandma Grunts from Port Perry as special speaker. Every- one is welcome - so come and bring a friend. Harry and Doris Hill attend- ed the Rebekah Lodge assembly at the Royal York Hotel in To- ronto on Sunday evening where Harry received his member- ship. Congratulations and best wishes were extended on Sun- day to Reverend Leslie Critch, a former minister of Greenbank on his retirement from Faith United Church in Toronto. The Timms family of Joe, George, Barb and Marie attended his re- tirement service and farewell party. George took part in the program by singing two lovely solos. Reverend Critch will be enjoying retirement in New- foundland after being an or- dained minister for 37 years. Thought for the week: Do not pray for easy times Pray to be stronger men Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers Pray for powers equal to your tasks Phillyss Brooks Congratulations to the newly weds, Allan and Brenda Bailey who were married in the Island Church on Saturday. Eileen Slute, Alice Ross and Doris Armstrong are taking in the five-day AmeriFlora Bus Tour to Columbus, Ohio, which includes attending shows of Red Skelton, Irish Rovers and the AmeriFlora and travelling through the Ohio Omish coun- try. Church this week will be held in Utica at 11 a.m. communion Sunday. Friday is euchre night in Uti- ca Hall starting at 8 p.m. Bert and Lise Mitchell held their auction sale on Thursday evening, they will be soon mov- ing to their new home in Port Perry and we wish them the very best as they leave this com- munity and the home where they raised their family. If the truth be known, Bert just want- ed to be closer to the golf course. Clear your calendar for Sat- urday, June 27 as Epsom and Utica communities get set to celebrate Canada's 125th. Plan to take in the parade, games and an evening of entertain- ment. And ladies, be fore- warned, we will be asking some of you for cakes to go with those delicious strawberries that will be served. More details on this next week. TN GIN er A . A I OAT
