Tips to enhance your property As summer begins to loom closer and closer, do you find yourself longing for a deep, lush lawn? A healthy, well-manicured lawn, combined with at- tractive landscaping can do wonders to enhance the overall appearance of your home. And while most home- owners still tend to prefer their lawns to consist of grass, many are consider- ing other effective and at- tractive ground covers which don't require quite as much maintenance. Whatever type of lawn or groundcover you prefer, 'you should treat it with tender loving care and you'll be rewarded with a healthy, resilient lawn that both you and your family will be proud of. It's important to know exactly what kind of shape your yard is in, so take a good look around. Are there large discolored patches or extremely com- pacted, muddy areas? Is there a lot of thatch? {Thatch is dense, dried un- dergrowth, that can ham- per the growth of your lawn}. Depending on the shape your lawn is in, you may want to use some fertilizer to help it get a good, healthy start. Spring is a good time to fertilize be- cause it's just before your lawn's most active growth season. Spring is also a good time to aerate your lawn if you have thatch problems or soil compaction. You can do this by hiring an ex- pert from your local nur- sery or gardening centre, or renting machinery yourself. These machines remove small cores or plugs of soil and grass from the lawn, opening it up so that air and water can circulate more effec- tively. Some lawns may re- quire aeration more than once during the season. The recommended times to aerate are spring and early fall. To aerate, there should be adequate soil moisture, but not an ex- cessive amount. It is also important to make sure your lawn is not overrun by thatch. Too much thatch can cause disease, insect and drought problems in your lawn.
