The lands at Indian Trading Point were lost when the prov- ince passed an act in 1851 transferring the lands to Cart- wright Townhip, later Maripo- sa Township, without a surren- der from the Mississaugas. The Scugog Indians have been pressing a land claim involving the point since the 1890s. The Mississaugas of Scugog Island have not been treated well by history. From lords of a vast region of land, they have been reduced to a local govern- ment controlled by the federal Indian Act on one of the small- est reserves in the country. As a small band, they have not been eligible for many of the pro- grams established by the feder- al government and have been under serviced as a result. Over the past 10 years the five modern bands of the Missis- sauga Nation have begun to work together again in what is one aspect of the revitilization of Native culture and self deter- mination in Canada. As a group, the Mississauga Nation has researched and submitted 10 major land claims and treaty rights issues to the federal and provincial governments. The largest of those claims, based on the Williams Treaty of 1923 {originally intended to clear up many of the older claims} will be a subject of negotiations be- tween the governments later this year. The Mississaugas of Scugog have also been active partici- pants in the national effort to have self government rights recognized in the Canadian Constitution. In fact they are a part of a modern alliance of nine First Nations in Ontario known as the United Indian Councils, who were the first in Ontario to commence negotiations on self government. They moved quick- ly in this area in order to outline practical models of First Nation government and realistic ways in which First Nations and oth- er levels of government can work together in the best inter- est of all Ontario citizens. One of the ways in which In- dians in Canada have ex- pressed their hope for a better future is by changing the words we use to address them. They have successfully changed the language of 'Band' to First Na- tion' from coast to coast , In the final analysis, the Mis- sissaugas of Scugog Island, and other First Nations across Can- ada, are participating in a movement of significant social change, where they are working to recapture the proud heritage of their fore-fathers and give to that heritage a modern expres- sion that will secure a better fu- ture for their children. This no- ble effort to create wellness in their communities and to create opportunities for their children is not an easy road to follow. By recapturing some greater de- gree of self sufficiency they will be able to contribute to Ontario the way they did when the origi- nal relationship was estab- lished more than 200 years ago. The Mississaugas of Scugog Island, and all First Nations, deserve our support in this diffi- cult task they have set for them- selves. By helping them now, we will gain from them as well, and we will all create a better Ontario for all of our children and their children as well.
