10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 23, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" | Letters to the editor LE daa a Johnson's history "as he sees it" To the Editor: Having just returned from the 6th World War Two Aircrew Reunion since 1945, in Winnipeg, I have had little time to prepare further discus- sion about the Scugog Island Indian Reserve. However, I do question the remarks of Dr. I.V.B. Johnson relating to the history of the Scugog Island Reserve. He supplies no bibliography, but merely says "as | see it." Band records were kept by various Christian missionaries, not by the bands themselves. Dr. Johnson does admit howev- er, to the nomadic characteris- tic of the band. It is the opinion of many, including myself, that most of the claims are frivolous, but may be a lawyer's delight. The benefits they have received from Canadian society far out- weigh any loud claims, real or imagined. As well, native blood lines have been severely diluted in the past several hundred years which makes the term "abo- riginal" relatively meaningless, at least in Eastern Canada, where fraternization and mar- riage with Europeans, was common. In one of our local papers, there was a letter signed only by the Chief and councillors of the band. Many do not know who these folks are. Mrs. Yvonne Edgar is Chief, Rick Edgar is the Building Commissioner and Arthur Goose the Land Commissioner. I will deal with their remarks, and the further remarks of Gary Edgar, at a later date. Respectfully, Joel W. Aldred, D.F.C. Real reasons for dump? To the Editor: - For the past two years I've read a lot of articles about choosing dump sites from envi- ronmental officials, and re- sponse from the public rejected. No one seems to know the real reason why some locations wouldn't make a proper dump site. To my knowledge and ex- perience and for what I have seen, dump sites should be at least 10 miles away from a town or village and 15 miles away from the lake. First, regardless how careful they are with the garbage, you can still smell the odor of the dump a mile away. Second, seagulls and all kinds of wild birds gather together by the millions, which create prob- lems for the small aircraft fly- ing around the lake. Third, all the birds tend to fly around to- gether and I don't think it would be safe for anybody to go for a walk. At the lake there would be bird droppings flying around. Some areas are bad enough as it is. I don't think you would like it when it happens on your windshield. Imagine going for a walk, what would your clothes look like? You wouldn't be able to look at the sky again, if you let the dump site be anywhere near the lake because the sea- gulls would be flying so low. I'd advise you to buy an umbrella. This may sound weird but I am fed up with regional politi- cians. I picked out the area for them. I paid my own long dis- tance calls but because it came from me, it's not good. They want the credit for it, so they keep on searching.
