i ANY Y Yang ' \ "A Family Tradition for 126 \ Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 23, 1992 - 13 Waste Reduction Week The Recycling Council of On- tario's 8th annual waste reduc- tion awareness week is set for Sept. 27 - Oct. 4 this fall and the theme for the week is "The Fu- tureis Rs!" In addition to the 3Rs of re- duction, reuse, and recycling, other Rs we are all encouraged to practice are responsibility, refusing or rejecting, and re- thinking. A committee of Scu- gog-area volunteers has al- ready begun meeting to start making plans for the week. This year, the Recycling Council is suggesting targeting different days of the week to highlight different waste reduc- tion activities. Their suggested schedule is Monday for reduc- tion; Tuesday for composting; Wednesday as zero garbage day; Thursday for conservation of energy, water, and transpor- tation; Friday for exchange or reuse; and Saturday for commu- nity clean-up. Since every sector of the com- munity -- government, indus- try, community groups, schools -- and every age group from chil- dren to seniors is affected by "the garbage problem," this year's involvement should be greater than ever! The specific targets for each different day may help to provide a focus and stimulate ideas for groups that have not been involved before. Any family, business, com- munity group, school, library, or anyone else looking for a sug- gestion for a Waste Reduction Week project is welcome to get in touch with Scugog Town- ship's Waste Reduction Week co-ordinator for this year. Peo- ple who do choose to take part will discover that learning to re- duce the amount of garbage we create is not just good for the en- vironment, it also tends to make us feel good! Call local co- ordinator Janet Banting at 985- 3225 with questions, sugges- tions or ideas for this year's Waste Reduction Week. YMCA programs The Port Perry YMCA is now offering two great new summer programs for kids! One is the "Farm Club," and the other is the "Dance Club." The "Farm Club" offers kids ages four to eight years a terrif- ic chance to learn about the farm at Sundance Meadows, Seagrave. The Y and the Dar- bys have joined forces and put, together an action packed week that includes hayrides, pony rides, demonstrations, games, crafts, songs and more! It's of- fered in one-week morning ses- sions and is guaranteed fun! The "Dance Club" will run at the Masonic Hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in two-week sessions and will give kids ages four to 10 years the op- portunity to learn lots of dance! There's a half hour of jazz, then a half hour of ballet to start with then crafts, games and songs based on the dance theme. Badges will be earned as skills are learned, and a parent's day is prepared for the last class of each session. Meredith Jackson says it's totally awesome! So, for some awesome sum- mer fun, don't forget the YMCA!
