"Rally" is the Pony Club term for Eventing, an Olympic disci- pline in which competitors must ride a formal Dressage test, follow with a Cross Coun- try or endurance phase (Gallop- ing across open country and over fixed obstacles), and finsih with Stadium Jumping compe- tition. Scoring is done on a pen- alty point basis, with all errors of course, refusals, rails down and falls counted as penalties. The rider - or team - with the fewest penalty points wins. Pony Club Rallies offer both team and individual prizes. Eventing - or Three-Day Eventing as it is, called at the upper levels, was first devel- oped in the 19th Century as a - competition for cavalry horses and riders. It was once called Combined Military Training. The Dressage phase demon- strates the horse's obedience and control. The Cross Country phase simulates a cavalry 'charge (one horse at a time!) And the Stadium Jumping phase demonstrates the horse's long-range stamina and fitness. Riders must have first-rate fit- ness themselves, and a wide range of riding skills to fit the different demands of the three phases. The "C" in C Rally refers to the minimum level riders must have passed in the Pony Club testing system in order to enter. C Rally offers four divisions: Starter Rider, for those attend- ing their first C Rally; Starter Horse, for horses attending their first C Rally; Training, for more experienced horses and riders; and Open for the most skilled (often B and A level Pony Clubbers eventing at the preliminary level on the recog- nized circuit). The young competitors move into Mohawk Raceway on Fri- day afternoon, and are totally responsible for coaching them- selves and caring for their mounts until they leave the property on the Sunday after- noon. Adults are present as chaperones and officials, but play no role in horse care or coaching. There are prizes for the best job of stable manage- ment, and for best captain. C Rally is the qualifying com- petition to choose the Regional teams for Pony Club National Rally, which will also be held at Mohawk Raceway, July 22 to July 25.
